| Yapping and Clicker training Damned, Bandit is one hell of a yapper, he barks for barking sake, he barks at people, things, THE darkness, his shadow and all I have been telling him is quiet and holding gently the muzzle, it works for a while but not always. Has anyone done the clicker training where you treat for barking and treat for not barking and been successful? Scooby hardly barks, thank god |

Jack was also a spinner when I got him. He'd spin for no reason, which I've heard can be a behaviorial problem. But I taught him how to spin on command, and the random spinning has pretty much gone away. I like the clicker idea!

| Yes, its pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Keep the treats and the clicker in your pocket, when he starts to bark don't say a work but wait until he stops by himself, when he stops gently say 'quiet, good boy' and click the clicker at exactly the same time as you give him the treat. Keep doing that every time he barks until he starts to stop earlier and earlier in anticipation of the click and treat, then once you are certain he is beginning to understand (usually takes at least a few days) you can begin to say 'quiet' while he is still barking, eventually he should stop on your command waiting for his click and treat. |

Wow, so you did it? So do not treat with his barking? I heard that you must treat for barking and actually encourage it then treat it, then also quiet him and treat him, but I am NOT wanting to do this as by nature Poms are yappers and this can be detremental. I will do the bit today. I am so glad scooby does not bark more than alert barking if he feels someone is trespassing, otherwise he does not. Bandit jeeze and so it is high pitched and squeaky | |

It takes a little patience to wait for him to stop barking, but it really does seem to work! Dog Trainers always say that you need to be careful that you are rewarding the behavior and NOT the end of the behavior; this time is the opposite; you DO want to reward the end, not while it is happening. Good luck!
