| Please give us some advise on sick yorkie..please Hi We live in the UK. We have a 11 year old yorkie who is very ill and we are really worried about him. About 3 days ago he went really ill and wasnt eating his food or drinking, then the following morning he couldnt even walk or even suppost himself he would just fall over,so we took him to the vets and when we got to the vets it was just the front right leg he was unable to use but still couldnt support himself to stand. The vet gave him a series of medicines (anti-inflamtries,steroids,pain killers) and suggested it could be meningitis/tumour which are affecting the nerves and hopefully he will pick up. Later yesterday night he picked up loads and was walking/eating/drinking an trying to run and alot better in himself, but still unable to use the front right leg. But this morning he woke up ill again and just the same as before,so we went back to the vets and he gave him the same meds again and he was still unsure and suggested he needed a MRI scan to find out what was causing it. But as im typing now the meds havent worked this time and is not much better. We dont have pet insurance though and there is no way we could afford a MRI scan and we are really worried about what we can do for him i really hope anyone has any advise on what might be causing this or on a posible way forward. Sorry to go on alot Thanks Steve |

| Steve I am truly sorry about your Yorkie being so sick. I don't really think anyone other than a vet should give you any advise because it sounds like she really needs a professional to care for her at this time. This seems very serious and should be attended to with or without insurance. An MRI can locate the problem. Please don't let her suffer because you can't afford the bill. Work something out with the vet and get the treatment needed. Good luck and I hope you follow threw and all works out for both of you. |

| Aww, Steve, it's horrible to have your furbaby ill and not know what you are dealing with. Can you afford to seek out a second opinion? Perhaps a more knowledgeable vet will have an idea. Will your vet work out a payment plan for you? It's hard to say what the problem might be (others with more knowledge will answer)...but I do wish you the best and hope your baby improves!

| I agree with everyone. The Vet probably feels this is a neurological problem and only an MRI can show something like that. Def. ask about a payment plan. 11 years old is still young and he deserves to be happy and healthy. Best of Luck. P.S. I also responded to your other post |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am so sorry to hear about yout sick baby, Pixie my 1 1/2 year old was falling over last week and the er vet gave me the same possibilities, brain tumor, meningitis etc and wanted to do the MRI and spinal tap if she didn;t get better. Fortunately she was ok the next day. I know those tests are expensive but I guess it's the only way to really diagnose neurological symptoms. I will keep you in my prayers.

| How is he now? Hope he's improving. Vets bills can be horrendous in this country, I know. Just last week I had to pay £125 for an x-ray & some antibiotics for one of my other breed dogs, for what turned out to be just a slight infection in her nail bed! What about the Blue Cross? Could you qualify with treatment through them? |

| Hi meggie thanks he is alot better it seems it might have been a inner ear infection, which the vet missed but the meds he has been on have helped him loads and he seems nearly back to full health. We have been very pleased with the price of the vets bill though because he did have quite a few things done all together he had: 3 visits to vets 3 steroid injections 3 anti biotic injections 3 pain killer tabs then a weeks supply of steroid, anti biotic, and pain killer tablets And all that came to £113 and we went back about 2 days ago and he gave him a 2 week supply of a lower dose steroid and he checked him again and that just came to £13.33 Cheapest vets we have seen! But all the staff were very freindly and caring i know he missed the infection but he did give all the right meds to clear the infection if that makes sense |

| I know you're in the UK, but just in case, here goes...I had a similar problem with myCockapoo when we first moved to Central Florida. Very lethargic, diarrhea, vomiting, extreme weakness, he couldn't even manage very low steps to our deck. Anyway, we rushed him to the vet. It turns out that we have Cane Toads here and they are extremely poisonous...according to my vet, several dogs have died here. We were very fortunate with Chipper and he made a full recovery but it could have gone either way. Is it possible that he could have come into contact with something similar? It's a neurologic poison. All they have to do is lick them...the poison is excreted through glands in their skin. Just a thought - probably don't have anything like that over there, but.... Glad your baby is doing better! |

| Just a bit of information that might be of use. It's now the law that the vet has to give you, free of charge, a copy of the prescription for medication your animal is on if you ask him to. It can be amazingly useful if your dog is on long term medication. My oldest Yorkie has a heart problem, age related, & has been on 2 lots of pills for the last 3 years, which I bought from the vet at £48 a month. I'd heard these drugs were cheaper online, from reputable pharmaceutical suppliers in this country. When I was at the vets last month, with one of the younger ones for his stitches removed, the head vet happened to come into the treatment room where the nurse was removing his stitches, so I plucked up my courage & asked him about it, expecting to get a cool response. But it was amazing, he was very interested that I could get them even cheaper than his supplier charged. He sorted the prescription there & then, so my old one wouldn't run out, & asked me to let him know how I got on & what it cost, to give him leaverage with his supplier for a cheaper price. I ordered the pills from a firm down south. I'd found a few different sites selling the drugs I needed, all similar priced, but I chose this one as I could email a scanned copy of the prescription & we were getting a bit low on the pills. The service was incredible! I ordered & emailed at 11 am Tuesday & the pills arrived, by registered mail, free P&P, at 10 am Wednesday, less than 24 hours later! They were EXACTLY the same branded pills that I buy from the vets, same tub, same box, but instead of costing me £48 they cost me £23. |
