Since when ? In all the time I talked about my female who was three and a half at the time, and will be four in July....did no-one else say this to me ???? Not even the best breeders on this web-site ! Not only that, but in all the books I have read, I have never heard of that written either. Even my pick of the litter, top show-ring Bearded Collie's mother was 5 when she had her first litter, and believe me those breeders would never have risked their dog ! Is this a Yorkie thing ? I always thought it best for the dog to be under 5 years, but why would it be dangerous after 3 for a first litter ? I know Guinea-pigs have to be bred before a year before their pubic bone sets. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THAT FOR DOGS. Could anyone clarify ? Gobsmacked......Debra | |

Like I said, pm them...I can't remember the exact wording but I know that I've seen it posted many times here.

| Thanks for that.....but as I said, I asked loads of questions at the time, and none of these breeders or any of the others on here told me about that, and they knew all about Tammy. They knew I was learning, and that this would be my first litter if it worked, and they knew Tammy was over 3 years old and gave me very good advice on feeding etc for which I was so greatful.....maybe an oversight, but if true a very dangerous one for my bitch if she had gotten pregnant. It's a pity I didn't hear of this before, as there is bound to have been talk of it at sometime, just not since I have been on YT. My Scottish breeder friends will know the answer to this, and I will e-mail them immediately I am so glad this has been mentioned ! Thanks so much - I will check. My babies mean the world to me, and I would never risk them |

| I;m sure you can just go to searchand find post my Mardelin and others. Different breeders have different ideas, but I tend to follow the advise of these long time respected breeders and think it would never be worth any risk, but that's just me.

Why do you see so many Show Females out there at a young age with their owner's attempting to get them Championed Quick? This is the reason and the fact as soon as they are bred, they cut down coat, but primarily to breed them before the age of 3.

| It's good to know - thank heavens she didn't get pregnant last time then, as nobody mentioned this fact to me, and I have never heard of it - I just thought there was a limit of 5 to be safe. I had no idea that first time was not after 3 ! Is this the case for any dog - and therefore was my breeder of my Bearded Collie wrong to breed for the first time at 5, or is it different for bigger dogs ? ....And am I right that Tammy at 4 yrs in a week, is too old now ? Sorry I seem to have taken over this thread....ooops ! |
