I'm so sorry you had to go through this. Were the pups early? Did the mother seem to be in distress? Makes you wonder what the vet was in such a hurry about? If after birth had still been present it would have still worked out when the second pup was whelped. I've never heard of a vet pulling it with forceps. My vet believes that after birth will be reabsorbed and is no problem as long as infection isn't indicated. I would definitely discuss this with your regular vet, it needs to be looked into.

I am so sorry about this. My vet has used forceps one time and it was my rat terrier,she had 3 BIG pups and 2 came out fine then she stalled,took her to the vet and a oxy shot was given he tried massaging her to the back and got her in the canal and could not get her any further,he did use forceps and got her out VERY GENTLY and she made it.You cannot use them unless they are in the canal.These were very large pups though not a tiny yorkie.He does not like to use them and we thought we would loose the last pup but did not.
Again he was very careful and the pup was breech,he did not just go in and grab what he could and pull.
I am so sorry again for your loss.I do feel he should not of done that without knowing or being able to feel the puppy and what way it was coming.Hope all is well with the mommy and I do hope he treated her with antibiotics after going inside with the forceps?

That's is what I was worried about too, if he caused permanent damage to London.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I would surely check into other vets opinions on this, it does sound very strange with him ignoring your questions.
On the lighter side - Congrats on the boy and I'm glad momma is okay!!!

How frightening an experience. I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you. I know places that sell forceps for whelping (dogs) but have never heard of buying or using them including vets. I just can't believe he took out her placenta! And that after you said you saw it pass. I'll remember your story for a loooong time, especially at whelping time.

It's so hard to lose a pup, and so traumatically. Our thoughts are with you.

I’m sorry for what happened to you and your female.

This Vet ignored your questions because he screwed up royally and he knows it.
Because you told him the afterbirth from the other pup had been delivered.

Most Vet stick together, so don’t be disappointed if you can’t find one to say
“Yes. that should not have been done “.

Ask this Vet for a copy of the reports/ records on your female so you may take it to
your regular Vet.
If he says I’ll send it to them…Tell them you will pick it up yourself.
10 to 1 the report will be falsely stated in some way.
He will state that no placenta
was present with the first birth ..etc.

Have your female checked out by your regular Vet for any internal damage that may have
been caused by what he did.

Write down everything that happened while fresh in your mind.
Compose a letter of what happen, any false statements contained in the report and
any finding from your regular Vet .

Send a copy it to the Vet who did this and tell them you want a refund for the Visit for
damages that caused the lost of the pup.
If you don’t get it, that you will seek legal services.

The Vet visit is all that you will probably receive because getting a Vet on malpractice is hard to do,
They are covered under different laws that allows then to get by with doing damage under what is called
MINIMUM STANDARDS OF PRACTICE and they will put a spin on things to
cover-up what really happened.
Good luck if you decide to go after him.

Congrats on the one pup that is alive and I hope he did not do any damage to your female.

Yes, Kimberley, I would say the vet killed the puppy. I have had two different vets deliver a pup with forceps..BUT was told how careful it must be done.
I kwpt telling my long time vet to just grab it and get it out..he said.."I have to be sure I have the forcep around the pup or all I will pull off is the sac and leave the puppy to drown"...I am so sorry.

This makes me so mad. SO SO FREAKING MAD!!

I've typed out everything that happened from the birth of the first pup and everything that happened at the vet's office. I'm going to call tomorrow and ask for records for London and just go from there.
