Donating YT 14K Club Member | Did the vet kill our pup? I say, YES! We have had to deal with the passing of our rescue pom, Valentino, a few days ago. Our second tragedy happened today. Even though I did not share it, London was pregnant. At 2 p.m. today, she delivered a small but strong little boy. I knew there was one pup left. After an hour, I started to worry. I could not find a vet here in town that was taking emergency calls. Even our 24 hour clinic is no longer open 24 hours. Several vets were out of town or weren't answering pages. I finally located a vet about 45 minutes away. He agreed to meet us so I loaded London and her one pup (this is 4 hours since the delivery of the pup...also to add that after she delivered the male, her contractions stopped completely). He did an internal exam and said there was no blockage. He gave her a calcium shot. He said that sometimes started the contractions back up. After about 20 minutes, he gave her an oxytocin shot. Her contractions immediately started back up. After 10 minutes, he did another internal exam. We waited another 10 minutes. He did another internal exam. He asked me if she had delivered the afterbirth from the first pup and I told him yes, she had. He said he felt afterbirth in there. He got forceps and pulled out a mass of tissue..."afterbirth". The pup was still in her uterus. After about 15 minutes, he did an internal exam while pushing down on her uterus. Out popped this dead little girl with a lot of blood. I was horrified. Her umbilical chord had been torn...no sack, no afterbirth. That afterbirth that he pulled out of London was this pup's lifeline. There was no sack when she fell out. When he pulled out the "afterbirth", he pulled everything off of this pup that would have normally kept her alive. Mind you, this is all hindsight. At the time, I was too upset to realize what had happened. I did ask the vet, "the afterbirth you pulled out, did it belong to this little girl?" No answer. I also asked, "What about the afterbirth for this pup...will she pass it?" No answer. All he kept commenting about was how small she was and that she looked "shriveled". She looked like a normal newborn pup to me. I paid my fee and left...like I said, looking back on it all, that vet killed that little girl. I know for a fact that she was alive when I left my house. I distinctly heard her heartbeat with my stethoscope. It's been hell and hopefully, the little boy will be the strong fighter that he appears to be. He was only 2 ounces at birth but I keep "bothering" London by making sure he's nursing. I am just horrified. Looking back, I've NEVER heard of a vet using forceps to pull a pup. Am I just naive on this? My mom said that I shouldn't have paid that vet a penny. Knowing how things are down here, I knew that if I hadn't paid him, he would have called the S.O. on me for theft of service. Sorry for the long thread...........................

| Oh Kimberley, I am so very sorry for London and your loss! I would say that your instincts are probably correct...why in the world did he do such a thing?! Why would he give the Oxy shot, see that she was having contractions again, and then insert forceps?! Like I said, I am truly sorry for the loss of this precious little girl! ON a different note, CONGRATS on your sweet baby boy!! Tammy Last edited by TammyJM; 06-30-2007 at 07:40 PM. |

| Oh, Kimberly I am so sorry for you and your whole family. What a thing to have to go through. I have never heard of a vet using forceps for a delivery on a small breed. Time is your best bet and his best bet would have been to just do a c-section. I had a female that had a hard time delivery the last one. Too much time had gone by for her to deliver herself,so I rushed her to the vets and they gave her the shot, we waited and then had to do a c-section. No forceps were ever used. Glad to hear that London and her little boy is alive. It is a holiday weekend and I know that many vets are getting ready for vacation. So sorry you had to go to someone unknown to you. We will keep you in our prayers. T. Last edited by topknot; 06-30-2007 at 08:04 PM. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | You need to report his ass and let him know you are contacting and attorney. Sounds like some serious malpractice to me. SOB. Hope you can get your money back at least. I would also put out the word about his services. Sounds like he shouldn't be practicing. I am so sorry. I can only imagine how your hurting now. Sending hugs and kisses your way.

| Oh, I'm so sorry. Poor little girl; sending prayers that the boy to do well. I think you're right, the vet killed this pup, and he knew he killed the puppy which is why he didn't answer your questions regarding the afterbirth. Thank goodness London and her remaining pup are okay.

| That must have been a horrible ordeal for you both...I don't know anything on breeding, but I do believe your instinct are correct....I hope there's something you can do, at the very least get a refund for His theft of (lack of )services.....I know someone who's cat was at a vet & they went to pick it up but didn't want to pay, so the vet refused to return the cat til paid, she called the police & they made the vet return the cat...he was told he could not hold a pet as ransom & he had to take her to court for non payment of services...I hope you can file a complaint somewhere on him.... http://www.animallaw.info/topics/spusvetmalpractice.htm http://www.vetabusenetwork.com/savetoc.htm

| What a horrible week you've had. I am so sorry for the loss of little Valention and your little baby girl. I didn't even know forceps could be used on a puppy, but considering the damage they can do to a skin baby, I can only imagine (and now I know) how much damage they can do to a tiny puppy. Personally, I don't think that vet should be allowed to practice. I am so very sorry and will keep you and your family, and London, Bless her heart, in my thoughts and prayers.

| i have had to have c-sections on two of my girls and forceps were not used either time. I am fairly new at breeding but it sounds to me like this vet made a huge mistake. i sure hope he hasn't damaged London inside. Please when she gets able have your regular vet give her a good check up. those forceps might have done some permanent damage to her as well. i am so sorry you had to go thru this. |
