I am so glad you at least got two pups out safely, but most of all - glad Mom is fine. Fluid on the lungs at this point could mean a heart problem or a cleft in the palate. When the poster said syringe they didn't mean the medicine giving syringe or a needle syringe without the needle - the one you need is made for taking boogers out of a baby's noses.

Try shaking down the puppy, also called swinging the puppy - Support the baby's head and neck, hold him stomach down just above your head and swing him down in between your spread knees making sure nothing is in your way you could hit on the way down - the centrifugal force gravity will help remove fluids from the lungs and then you can use the bulb aspirator (syringe) by squeezing all the air out of the bulb and then placing in his mouth and releasing to suck out any fluids, then repeat on each nostril. You can do this several times, but it may be more than simply fluid in the lungs. Do you see any milk coming out of his nostrils while nursing? This puppy needs to be watched very closely.

Oh I am so Pleased Trini and the two pups are home I was so worried about you all. I am so sorry you lost the two pups. Did the vet tell you that the pup has fluid? If you feel he is distress I would call the vet.

Just looking back over the swinging directions it's hard to explain in words - wanted to add when you're in the swinging motion the baby's head will be pointing down the stomach toward you.

Milk Does Come Out Of His Nose Right After He Nurses But He Is Still Having A Hard Time With That Too He Just Kinda Sits Under Mom And I Am Supplementing With Puppy Milk...

Be careful supplementing that one, I would be doing it drop by drop with him in a nursing position on his stomach, not on his back like you would a human baby. He may have a cleft in his palate. This is a hole or slit in the roof of the mouth that lets fluids go to the nose and the lungs rather than down the esophagus where they belong. Sometimes you can see them very easily just by looking at the roof of their mouth, others are harder to detect. You might just have the hole to big in the bottle though and he is getting too much at once. Cleft palates cannot form a strong enough suction to nurse or to suck on a bottle nipple. There have been a couple on here that are doing fine though with special care. Why are you supplementing? The colostrum which they get from Mom is only available for approx. 24 hours and it is really important as it will help them fight off infections, both bacterial and viral.

almost every breath he takes is gurguly, if you can't hear it you can feel it. Is it possible for that to clear on it's own?...when i swung him down just now before I fed him he sounded better for a second only though...I will check the hole in the bottle...

The vet said he needed to eat and oh my Trini is sooo skinny, is that normal durring pregnancy?

Maybe she just looks thin because you are use to seeing her pregnant. Mine keep extra weight on all throughout nursing.

If the puppy cannot form a suction to nurse he could very well have a cleft in his palate. Look at the roof of his mouth with a flashlight and see if everything looks okay. Some are very obvious, but others even vets have trouble seeing. Do you know if the er vet checked for this?

When you hold the bottle upside down it should drip out in drops not a stream and always feed a baby in the natural nursing position on its tummy.

I would continue to "swing the baby" and suction both the baby's mouth and nose as long as the breathing doesn't sound clear. Fluid in the lung will lead to pneumonia.

I will check him in his mouth the next time I feed him. He was doing this funny thing earlier looked like he was gagging and rubbing his tongue arched down in his mouth. It is not that he can not suction because I saw him gently suctionning the bottle but he just cuddles close to her and looks as if he is looking for something but just ends up laying under her, where he is warm. His bigger brother will be sucking away and he will push lil bro out of the way and little bro is also not as warm as the bigger one.

He only drinks for like 30 secs at a time, maybe just a few drops. So I figure to keep trying to feed him every hour or hour and a half...

If I suction his mouth after I gently "swing" him should I suction all the way by his throat? Will it hurt him/knock out his wind?

Don't suction down his throat - the swinging should bring any fluids to the mouth so just inside the mouth is fine and each nostril.

If he can suck from a bottle he can suck from a nipple, continue to try every hour before you feed him to try to get him to latch on to Mom. Move all the hair for him, wet the nipple with formula, keep big brother from bumping him off, and do everything you can to help in latch on first.

He should be eating 1 ml (5 ml is 1 tsp) per ounce of body weight every 3 hours so 8 ml per ounce per day, so if you can only get drops in at a time you have to feed much more often to get the full amount in him.

It is very dangerous to feed a chilled puppy, warm him up slowly first. Normal anal temperature for a newborn is 96 or 97 degrees. If he is feeling cold then check temperature before feeding. Also make sure you are boiling the water before adding it to the powder if you aren't using a ready made formula that is premixed. The formula should also be heated to about 98 degrees. Do you have a source of heat? Make sure he is staying warm and not wandering off and getting chilled - this will kill a newborn puppy very quickly.
