| How soon after whelping. . . Can mama get a bath? She is FILTHY! She threw up a couple of times, too, so I think that's part of the "yuk" on her fur. Can I bathe her when the little ones are all sleeping? |

| bath I bathe mine on the third, but wash the rear after whelping..and the face if need be..some new moms get upset away from the pups and if it takes more then 15 mins you are going to have a panting, nervous wreck.. |

I'm guessing you meant the 3rd week. Experience has proven that putting a mother under stress can cause her milk to diminish or dry up. The most I do is keep her private areas clean when she potties, breast extremely clean and of course her face | |

| I do wash them off with a warm rag (rinsed several times), but I wait until about 3 weeks for a real bath (although very short). The reasoning is that the cervix is still open so you don't want something like soap or bacteria getting in there that may cause irritation. |

| bath Sorry, I meant the 3rd day, BUT I bathe all my girls a day or so before whelping so all they need is a butt wash afterwards in most cases...and I do not recommend standing them in water..just run the sprayer over them and a light bath..my longer time moms seem to enjoy and "spa treatment" around the 3rd day...but you have to remember they are happy to get away from pups for a bit...I don't have frantic moms who go bonkers away from pups... | It is OK to rinse off the hind area after whelping. Just make sure that she is dry before she returns to her pups. After about a week, we made sure the pups filled up and gave her a full bath, dried her completely and she was just fine. |

| Bath I have heard that you should not clean the teat area for a week or so after whelping due to the pups not recognizing her smell, therefore not wanting to nurse. Is this true? |

| Bath after whelping HI, I just talked to my vet this morning about bathing Zoey who had her healthy puppies on Thursday night to early Friday morning. He said to go ahead and give her a full bath. Wipes were not cutting it for me! He even said I could use her usual shampoo (lavendar). I had to make sure she was blow dried immediately after her bath so that she does not get cold. I gave her a good bath, blow dried her anf off she went to nurse! The puppies latched on with no hesitation. It is now hours later and they still have no problem nursing! |
