| I bought my first breeding female on a mentoring contract. My dog (co owned wth my mentor) took her kennel name, used one of her line for stud and she was entitled to one puppy back from the first litter. As it turned out, we hooked up together and she does the showing and I do the breeding. But it is a wonderful way for a newbie to learn the art of breeding and showing quality show dogs. I would have hated to get into all this any other way!

When I place one of my puppies I want them to be in a loving home rather if they are on limited or unlimited registration.. I do believe that NO dog should have to live it's life in a plastic or wire crate and never be given love.. If I ever found one of my puppies living in a environment of NO human contact, no love and being feed by a free feeder 365 days a year, god help that person! But if you are a reputable breeder you never place a pet puppy in a bad situation let alone a dog on full registration.. I like to sleep at night and I would not be able to if I placed my dogs with anyone (not knowing what kind of person they are) and gave them full registration on top of that..

| [QUOTE=YorkieRini]When acquiring my foundation of Yorkies I learned a lot. I learned that a sound Yorkie is hard to find. I had bought several Yorkies early QUOTE] I continued this on it's own thread in teh breeders section..sorry for getting way off topic Melanie! This is a good thread to keep focused. |

Haha..not convinced? I've told you all this before in private..not tired of hearing about it yet?..lolol You're one of the few I've known for a while and feel that we have the same desires when it comes to breeding Last edited by YorkieRini; 01-21-2006 at 08:56 PM.

| I've heard of Pet, Show/Breeding, and Co-owning contracts. Mentoring is something done out of the kindness of a breeders heart. Its their time, experience, and work that they give freely to help someone. |

| I agree that mentoring is from the hearts of the breeders. No dispute there. That is one way to help keep puppymilling and dogs dying down. However, the other side to this is that the potential buyer should have the right to not agree to "newly written terms" and walk be able to walk away. The deposit should be returned. There are loads of reasons that a buyer should be able to back out. Why wouldn't a breeder who felt the potential buyer had the willingness to learn, the desire to do their best be penalized because the breeder "power trips". My discussions with the "mentor" were fine until she finally emailed me exactly what I would be signing. I read her online contract and felt it was fine (at that time the "non-refundable" pet deposit did not exist. I would have gladly gone into a separate contract with her in addition to the regular contract. I truly believe that when you give your word, that is ALL one has. I should not be FORCED or held hostage into signing a contract that I don't agree with. That is WHY I asked up front before I drove all the way to pick up my "then" puppy. I can't believe anyone would put a deposit on ANY thing and not want it returned in "reasonable" amount of time. $500 is a lot of money to most anyone. Mentoring is a good thing and I hope people will mentor because of this a good thing. More people need "hands on mentoring" to keep our dogs healthy and happy. Mentoring is a great deal whether it be dogs, computer help, help with children, etc. Not always should there have to be a contract. Again, I too am entitled to my opinon. Thank you for your support in this forum and may all of you have a very healthy, happy new year. |

| I agree that mentoring is a wonderful thing that breeders can do to help others interested in breeding and I applaud those who do so out of the goodness of their hearts. I like the attitiude of shared knowledge instead of secrets and discouraging others to prevent competition. As an attorney I am always in favor of written contracts and agreements because then everyone knows what the terms are, there are realistic expectations on all sides and everyone knows what their obligations and responsibilities are. The contract should be executed before any money changes hands and the terms of any deposit and its refundability should be spelled out in the written contract. Luckierdog.....I appreciate you coming on and telling us your experience. I want to welcome you to YT and tell you how much of an asset you will be as a member here. |

This might seem like an obvious question...but why not neuter/spay the pup before he goes to his/her new home? Seems it would avoid a whole lot of headaches...not to mention paperwork.... Francie
