I have to go for now but I am going to "rest my case" with the above quote. This is exactly my concern. Many people think that breeding is breeding is breeding. If you don't like it, stay away from pups. I know you treat your dogs well, but not all breeders are like you. best wishes.

Or else why do we hang out here day after day answering questions? Does anyone think there is a puppy producer on the forum...at least one who has come out of the darkness to offer her help? Does ANYONE think that? I say again it is offensive to ask us to explain ourselves....we are not asking you to explain what makes you a "good" pet owner? Are we? Just food for thought!

I do not believe there is any honor in continuing to go down this road.

Actually my breeder practically wanted blood type and my first born to sell me this puppy. Yes, I am the best owner any pup could have.

We go over things over and over here and with folks that contact us per the phone or via websites. No amount of education is going to change some things. Folks are still going to go to that huge commercial breeder and buy that puppy when we have pleaded for them not too. I myself would rather see a thread asking why that person went there to buy the puppy. Educate me as a breeder. Did I do something wrong, did I not answer your questions- what made that large commercial breeder more attractive to you? I know that my pricing and that of many other breeders here on the board is competative. If you want to stop people from buying from the large commercials lets find out what they find so attractive. IMHO this thread is not going to do it. IMHO it is just insulting.

| This is where I sit. I've never bred dogs, but my mom breeds quarter horses. It is a wonderful experience watching that colt take it's first steps, but it will also rip your heart out trying to pull one out that's already dead to save the mom. With any birth for any type of animal there is a risk of death for the pups or mother it's just a fact of life that things can and do go wrong. Most breeders have made the decision to take this risk in order to bring marvelous specimens of the breed into this world. These breeders are not cold hearted, they love these dogs just as much as we love our pets if not more. They love their females enough to have numerous vets on call, spend has much money has needed and do hours of research in order to be able to do anything possible to save a mother in trouble. I believe when they tell someone to not breed because of the risk it's usually a person that loves their little girl so much that they want more of her. They just want this person to realize that they need to do a lot of research and understand the risks so has not to lose their precious angel (even then it can still happen). If a person is serious about becoming a breeder I've seen most of the breeders on here be nothing but helpful and suggest that person find a mentor. Breeding is not something to be taken litely and I feel most of the wonderful breeders on here are just trying to make people aware of that fact.

| OK, don't know if this will help explain, but breeding toy dogs is risky compared to the larger dogs because of their size. Also, more puppy deaths because of their size. If a large dog has some problems, they usually have more body reserve to rely on to recoup. If a lab loses a few pounds because of a problem, not too much of a problem, but if your 5 pound yorkie bitch loses a few pounds chances are she will die. There will be nothing to rely on to pull her through a rough time. You are starting with a much smaller speciem to start with. Also, the puppies of toy dogs get chilled very easy, and will die. They can not keep themselves warm. They must feed right away, or they will die, if they don't feed on mom, they have to be tube fed every 2 hours until they are strong enough to suckle by them selves. The smaller the bitch, the more risk of losing her if something happens. every time I breed a bitch I make sure my vet (a breeding specialist) will be available before I breed. There is always an ER vet, but my vet knows my dogs, and I trust her. |

| As a breeder what precautions to you take to limit the danger to your females? What are the kinds of things that can and have gone wrong? What did you learn from it? I have my bitches checked before breeding to make sure they are healthy and there is no problems before being bred. I had a bitch that only carried one puppy that was too large for her to free whelp so she needed a C-section. This was on a Sunday night at 10:30. My vet did meet me at the office and do the surgery, and called in an associate to take care of the puppy that was 1 week premature. They were not sure the pup would live, but lucky for me, she did. It was over 5 minutes before they got her to breath, and she did not have any face hair or leg hair on her. She looked like a bald mouse. Was also too weak to suckle for the first 4 days, and mom did not realise that she was her pup because she was out when the pup was taken. Can you explain what makes your program vs. someone with 21 females in their kennell different? What makes buying from you any different? someone with 21 females surely does not have the funds or the time to have her dogs tested for generic problems, like Liver Shutn or Legg Perthes. And I am sure she does not test her puppies for it. |
