| Help Someone..My female just had a new litter and acting strange in the night... NEW MOMMY..SLEEPING LITTLE..NEED SOME HELP ON SUPPLEMENTAL FOOD FOR NEW MOMMY??? Ok...Last time my girl had pups she had a calcium drop..I know it's very dangerous...Well...The problem this time is her eating habits for her health after just giving birth. I asked my vet about food for her and she said give her all the food she wants..Well..I find that is fine..."If she will eat it" and "Is it really good for her"??? **What I need help on is two things: 1. She is up most of the night wandering around and sometimes runny around..racing out of her room, barking and in general "crazy stuff"...Has any other breeder found this with their female??? 2. She never has been a good eater...very selective on what she will eat...Now again after giving birth she still doesn't eat right! Can anyone with experience tell me of a very good supplemental food?? She really needs to keep her strength up. A special note: When she had that calcium drop it was because the new babies were just draining her of her milk and eating every time they had a chance. She is a good mommy but very obsessed with staying with her babies...It is even hard to put her outside...She howls and screams and scratches at the door...It sounds like we are killing her so we just have to let her in. Right now it is 3:33 a.m. in the morning and she was acting real goofy...barking, running out of her room and then back in and so on and so forth. Every since we had that first scare (the calcium drop) after her first litter I get so scared that something will happen to her in the night and I will be sleeping...I love her so and don't want anything to happen to her. I gave her a calcium shot just now to see if it might calm her and do plan to take her to the vet in the a.m. as soon as she opens...If anyone is interested. I need to get some sleep and not be getting up in the night all the time...So...If someone could help me here I sure would appreciate it. Thanks..I always seem to get answers from you guys.. Sandie |

| Being a breeder means giving up your own sleep for as long as you have to while caring for your dogs... this is why I have very few mirrors in the house, LOL! I would supplement your bitch with 1/2 tums am and pm and give her a variety of food to choose from. Vanilla yogurt, cottage cheese, boiled chicken, rice, whatever she seems to be interested in eating. I use a raw mix meatball that my dogs will inhale even when they're not hungry...pm me for the recipe if you'd like. You can try playing soothing music (sounds nutty, but I swear by it) and keep her confined in an ex-pen set up around the whelping box to keep her from exhausting herself running around the house. Have the box in a quiet, draft free corner of a room where she will feel less fearful of disruption and you can try draping a fitted sheet over the pen to give her a more cave-like/safe atomosphere. good luck |

| SOunds like wonderful advice to me. One thing Ive learned with mamas and puppies, they love being confined and the draping over a kennel with a towel makes them feel safe. Its very normal for my females to stay out a total of maybe 1 minute for peeing with new babies for 3 weeks or so. They just want to be with them and dont care about exercise then. SO I just do what they want, they know best. Call me bad but my dogs eat anything they want, they love left over fried chicken off the bone (LOL) If your dog is panting and shaking and restless even after trying to make her contend, I would have her seen. Good luck and congrats on your precious babies! |

| problem I was told by my vet that giving an injection of calcuim when the level was not low can actually kill them. She needs a confinement place..perhaps a large pen with her box in it..a place she can get out of the bed and rest, when the pusp sleep, but not have the run of the house. She must eat or you will face the same eclampsia problem again..how about boiled/cooked chicken and rice, mix in some canned and dry...give her yogart, melted vanilla ice cream..cheese cubes and calcuim tabs. Try cooked eggs and hamburger..t-bone steak if that is what it takes. If she repeats this behavior again, you might consider spaying her as it would be in her best interest if she can not calm down or has eclampsia again. Best wishes |

| good advice has been given here... Ecampsia is nothing any breeder wants to see. I would allow the mom limited feedings until you get her level totally back to normal and youre assured she is eating anything and everything. The first 24-48 hours my moms usually dont eat much but will eat a huge meal right after whelping. If they dont begin to eat on their own by 48 hours I begin syringe feeding small meals of goats milk, baby rice ceral and chicken baby food mixed. Also bowls of goats milk given about 4 times a day add a bit of karo syrup. A couple days of this they begin to eat their own food but of course are still very picky. As a last resort I will use little cesars puppy, most any dog will eat it! good luck Kimberly

| Yes I heard that without a definite low calcuim an injection can do more harm then good, but didnt want to scare! Im sure all would love to know an update on your little family. Hoping for good things! |

| Calcium when administered by a vet in the case of Hattie was by IV mixed with glucose, they first checked her levels of course. She bounced back within minutes, barking and talking saying mom get me home to my pups! I limited her feedings to 3-4 times a day and suplimented the pups the rest of the time. I continued to let her stay in when she wanted but with wraps so the pups could have her comfort and preen them.

| Ok...Hi Everyone! For anyone that responded to my questions on this thread...This is for you. I replied under Sylvan's because she was the first one to answer my questions...But...I found that everyone of you had wonderful ideas. I have changed the sleeping arrangements for her and the pups...Brought up her medium size traveling cage and made it comfortable for her and the pups...But..Also kept "her" bed right next to the traveling cage so she can get away from the little ones and have her "own" place to sleep....So far so good...NOW..she does leave the pups for a little while and lays in her bed. Second...The Food...I have tried some of the ideas and they have worked..She still is finky about her food...always has been but she is eating better and not acting so crazy! I am going to keep on this and try the other ideas too. Third..Oops...here she is..just jumped in my lap..she must know I am writing about her! The sleeping business...after that night of NO Sleep...she is sleeping now... I want to tell everyone as I said before I LOVE MY LITTLE FURBABIES...The night I stayed up with her I made a palette on the floor next to her and the babies and laid my hand in the bed and she atleast laid her head on my hand once in awhile and sometimes licked my hand...I just wanted her to know it would be ok and I would be with her...I didn't want her to stress out. For YorkieRose...I just "ALWAYS LOVE" your replies..not just to me...but everyone...And..by the way the first time I got on this sight yours was the first reply I read and that was why I felt this must be a good sight and signed up...Just thought I would let you know. Thanks everyone again and I will keep you all posted...If I can figure out on how to put a thumbnail picture on the sight I will put my male and female on it so you can see them. Talk to all later...
