| Excessive Bleeding Okay, I just had the dew claws and tail done on my new litter. The vet said one of them had excessive bleeding, but wasn't too concerned. Of course I have never had this and was wondering of anyone else has either had this or heard of this. Please let me know. PS: I know I don't come on here that often anymore, but when I have a question usually someone has answers. Thanks in advance

| How old were your pups? "Excessive bleeding" in a tiny Yorkie pup can create all its own issues! Not often do you get excessive bleeding in puppies 5 days or under....and I dont think I have ever heard of a vet having excessive bleeding probles on pups less than 3 weeks old.....I have a VERY skepticle mind however, and if a vet told me that, my first quiet thought would have been to wonder HOW he executed the procedure and how many he had done before. My guess is he "cut" those tails off and it bled on that one....when they twist the tails off, it seals the tips of the tails, there is no bleeding and no need for suturing...but it MUST be done before day 5 from birth to do it that way. Please understand, I am NOT challenging the vet or his capabilities, I am just sharing MY personal thought processes when I hear this. My SECOND fleeting thought, as I tick questions and answers off in my mind, would be,"is there a bleeding/clotting issue with that baby, and did you check that baby's bleeding times....PT/PTT, fibrinogen, platelets, etc ....or perhaps he KNOWS why that baby bled? Just questions that come into MY mind...... |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | that is why I stoped having a vet doing my litters, because they cut I had my first litter done by the vet my son worked at, at the time and he cut and he told me that they might bleed a little and hand me a bottle of clotisol. when I told my mentor she rolled her eyes and thought my son to do the clamp and twist method, is no blood and my son has been doing that for my litters ever since. so sorry your baby went thru this, keep and eye on them, and hope you have a bottle of clotisol too.. hugs, |

| I know about the clamp and twist method, but never seeing it done or someone showing me how to do it, I am afraid to attempt it myself. With that said I have always allowed the vets to cut the tails and clip the dew claws. There is always a bit of blood, nothing major and the pups fall asleep within a few minutes. The pups are 3 days old, all doing well, eating, sleeping and whining just wonderfully. He is a new vet to me, I have brought one of my dogs there for teeth cleaning, really liked him and his place of business, so I figured I would give him a try, as I was not happy with my last vet who told me my dog as glaucoma when indeed she had a tooth problem. = We did not run any tests, I just feel like they went through enough today. Thanks for input, I will question him further.

| You are right...those babies have been thru enough for one day.....If I could say one thing that I would want every single person that reads anything on this forum to take away from me and my experience, it would be, "ALWAYS ASK 'WHY'"....I have always asked WHY???? anytime ANYONE tells me something I was not expecting, or I dont understand, or I just dont have a clue about. I have ALWAYS asked "Why"..... I wish EVERYONE would do that, in ANY aspect of their life....."WHY"? and if the answer is not enough for you, ask "WHY" again...until you have a firm grasp of the answer. ~ "The baby had a little excessive bleeding"....."WHY"??!! ( PS I had meant for the vet to do the tails the twist method...I had learned that from a vet I worked for in 60's-70's) Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 04-19-2012 at 07:20 PM. |

| I'm assuming that he did get the bleeding to stop before he sent you home. Have the areas stayed scabbed over? |

| Okay, Thanks everyone. I did ask why, he said he did not know. He said most blood disorders are hereditary and the others did not bleed a lot. It did stop without problems, just bleed more then the others. I called back today to ask more questions and they said that I should not worry, just to make sure he is growing, eating and going to the bathroom. Of course I will monitor him, as I always do with all my puppies. Just so you know I have been breeding for years, and this is just something I have never come across before, so I figured I would ask to see if anyone has had this happen to them or knew of some information that could help me understand this better. Thanks again everyone. =

| Oh and just a bit more information about me, I am a certified vet tech. As far as the clamp and twist, I have never come a cross a vet that knew this method. If I knew how to do it, I would do them myself.

| There is a video on Youtube on how to do the clamp and twist method. I watched it even though I am not a breeder. My opinion, I don't like it. I feel if a yorkie is going to be a show dog, then yes, dock the tail as that is the standard. However, it is going to be a pet, we should not dock the tails. Okay, off my soapbox. I believe there is another thread within this forum about the clamp/twist method that has the video attached. Good luck with your pup and I hope he is okay.
