Lets hope spaying will set her right...once the cause of her problem is gone, she has a chance to bounce back and take care of her puppies...what an ordeal. She would have died without you. God bless all of you. |
Despite some obstacles, we did have surgery today. Let me first say that we are home and so far hanging in there. Now for the story.... Was not sure if we were going to be able to have the surgery today since we had snow and sleet. Had to pick momma up from the ER Vet by 9 or be charged for another day. Called my vet and talked with him and he decided that we were going to all try to make it to his office. He had 2 techs there already and called in a 3rd. No time was set but would do it as soon as everyone arrived. Decided to head straight there from the ER vet and be there early instead of waiting till later. She was alert when we picked her up from the ER Vet. They did a wonderful job on getting her ready for today's surgery. Pumped her full of fluids, gave her 3 heavy hitter antibiotics, gave her a B12 injection and did a coag transfusion to give her extra coag to help in surgery. My vet was extremely pleased at their efforts to get her to the healthiest possible state prior to the surgery. Yes, he did call and thanked the doctor for doing that. Surgery started around 10:00-10:30. Tech's had the OR set up and heated prior to vet getting there so had NO waiting. Office was cleared out of all patients. Office would not take any visits till we was done. They were referring everyone to other facilities. He wanted NO ONE coming through that door until this was over. Yes, the doors were locked. Never in my life have I seen that happen. Went through exam and pre-op with vet and he explained that this would be a very difficult surgery. When taking her back he told us all to pray. Of course we were all crying and praying. Little after 11 was called and told surgery was done and they were sewing her back up. Uterus was worse than expected, stomach was better than expected, puss was in the abdominal cavity and she does have peritonitis. Uterus did start attaching self to other areas but no big transfer sites made. Chose not to remove urinary stones since the bladder had NOT been touched and with the posion floating around did not want to give it an incision to get into. So, hurdle 1--survive surgery was passed. Hurdle 2--wake up from surgery--passed. Hurdle 3--remain healthy 4 hours post op was passed. Did not know but there are 5 levels of danger for a dog. They are worst being Grave risk, High Risk, Moderate Risk, Slight Risk, and Minimal Risk. Before surgery we were placed on Grave Risk, We are now on High Risk and will stay there for the next 48 hours post op. Sorry to cut short but have to feed puppies...will be back to finish when done. |
Glad she made it thru surgery. This poor baby and all she has been thru. I know this has been so hard on you. Bless you for what you are doing for this momma and her babies. Prayers will continue for all. |
Just remember: "If the Lord will bring you to it, the Lord will bring you through it." Praying for mom. |
I will continue to pray for you and Momma and puppies. You have been through so much. If you were here I would give you a big hug. Praying super hard that everything turns out well. Thought you might like to know that BonBon started a prayer thread for your Momma under the sick/emergency section. God bless you and hang in there. |
My thoughts and prayers are with you :heart to |
Praying |
SO glad she's past the first few hurdles...will pray she continues to hold on and recover!!!! |
Everyone here has been awesome!!! I honestly feel that if we would not have had the love, support and prayers from our new friends here we would not be here today. Just fed babies. Was losing weight at first but now maintaining it. Lot was my fault but now seem to be doing well. Once a person understands that pups get 1 ml for every ounce. LOL Pups are back to bed with full tummy's and fast asleep. Which brings me back to my next issue. I need to see if anyone can recommend someone very trustworthy and experienced to help feed babies when I have to go to work. I work 3 nights on Fri, Sat, and Sun from 12a-12p I will possibly cut some of my hours but need to find a someone as a backup in case I can't get anyone to take care of them while I work. My mom and husband who have been my lifeline help when the can but also work so can't help out on those days. Sunday, they both may be able to but so far have not got that set up. Please let me know. I hate having to move them out to be taken care of but I have to pay off this huge debt that keeps growing by the minute. As for Mom, over the last 2 hours she has been given 10ml of water, 5ml of nutri-cal, and 4 ml of a/d mixed with warm water all by syringe. Will not go to food or water yet on own. Does get up and walk around some. Will go pee and that looks great. No stool yet. No vomiting. Alert. Eyes clear, temp 101.4. Weight 3.4 at ER Vet. A drop but since not eating it was expected. Hope it starts to go up back to a healthier weight. So far so good!!! 40 more hours to go!!!! So, back to story. Dr came out caring my baby wrapped in 2 huge heated towels. My first reaction was she is dead and I started shaking. He quickly reassured me that she is alive and she poked her head out of the towel and this beautiful little girl was alive, alert and wonderful looking. Of course I was bawling. I got to sit and hold her for the next 4 hours while we waited to see what she was going to do. Got the clear that we could go home but was also sent with transfer papers back to the ER Vet with surgery info in case she needs to go back and spend the night there. So far with her doing so great, she may be able to just stay here and recover but they are holding a bed for her just in case. Let me just say that I have had 2 wonderful places that have helped me through all of this and these 2 vets will be forever in my heart. They have gone above and beyond what any normal vet would have done. My vet is letting me pay out what we owe and the ER Vet has been reducing my bills as best he can but as we all know 24 hour hospitals are expensive to begin with. Have already talked to my vet several times today giving him updates. We are now BFF's. LOL So far all is good, no problems seen yet and hope the next 40 hours are all uphill. Thank you again for all the prayers. Keep fingers crossed that we continue to improve. Hard to believe that it has only been 3 days since this started. Seems like I have been living a nightmare for weeks. |
Oh I'm so sorry, If I was closer I would totally do it for you. I too grew up feeding and caring for Labrador puppies all night and day. I hope you find someone. What has your friend who was the original owner said or done throughout all of this?? I assume this little girl and her puppies are yours for keeps now? Has she offered to help pay for the bills? |
Not sure where in TX you are. I am in north Austin (Round Rock) and am willing to help this weekend. How far are away are you? |
1 Attachment(s) I am in the Fort Worth area. I have actually talked with the owner's mom and since her daughter has no money there won't be any help there. I already told them that NONE of them are going back unless I am reimbursed all expenses and time. Let me tell you, my time fee is high right now. A miracle has just occurred! Mom is in the bed with the babies!!!! She has just potied all of them, cleaned their faces and they are snuggled around her!!!!!!!!!!! Just contacted vet and he said she can try to nurse if she wants to. Oh how GOD is good to us!!!!!!!!! |
I have been reading (and praying) but haven't posted. Your picture has me crying now, what a precious miracle indeed! God bless! |

I have been crying for the last 20 minutes myself. I could not believe it. She got up and went to the box so I took the towel off it and she looked then walked away. Came back so I got 1 out and sat it on a towel in front of me. She then walked away again. Put pup back in box and she came over and was looking like she wanted to jump in there. So I picked her up and put her in and she immediately started licking a puppy. Yes, I was a nervous wreck. Felt the puppy to make sure she was not hurting it and noticed puppies bottom was wet. She was diapering it!! Sat down and she started cleaning its face, went to the next and did it again. The other two came over and she has cleaned all 4 and they are all curled up around her. Gave her the water bowl and she did not want any. Gave her the plate with food on it and she ate it on her own!!!!!!! Vet sent a message back that she could nurse if she wanted to. So I took the towel off her tummy to let them. So far no nursing but they are all snuggled around her. Don't know if I should feed them now or wait a little bit. It is feeding time. I am shaking like a leaf! OMG.....This is a huge relief!!!!!!!!!!! |
Maybe you should feed them so Mama can get her strength back. Babies take a lot out of Mama when nursing. |
What a wonderful update.... I can barely see thru the tears of joy to write. Oh what a relief that things are going well for the moment, and I pray that it will continue. This is so heart warming, and bless your heart for doing all you have done to help all 5 of these innocent little darlings survive. Hugs to all! |

Ok so now I am crying also! I pray to god that this little momma continues to improve. God knows that you deserve a break. Someone once told me that YT prayers are very strong...so I will keep praying for you. What a great way to start my day. |
It has been a great night!! Momma stayed with the babies most of the night. I have not seen her nurse them and have not offered them the tets. Went ahead and did the overnight feedings and getting ready to do this one. She would stay with them for awhile and then get out and come snuggle with me till they made noise. It was so great. She is a great mom so far. Very easy with them. I am just impressed that she knows they are hers. She has no problems with me getting them out to feed them, she will diaper them for me after it is done and clean their faces. I actually got so sleep last night and it sure feels great. Checked mom around 2 this morning. Temp 98.9, Will go to the food plate on her own and eat. Maybe just a few bites but she is eating. Tummy looks great. No abnormal swelling. No blood in urine. No BM yet. I just can not believe how well it is going. I was prepared for a rough 2 nights. I would have never expected to see this after all that has gone on. So now my questions. Should I put the puts up to her and see if they will nurse or just wait and see if she wants them there. She will tuck them around her tummy so I see that as a willing gesture. Will talk to the vet around 8 to see if we can get her on puppy food or if we still need to stay on this for now. I hope everyone here has a blessed day like I am having. |
