| I need info from Breeders please! My husband got me a Yorkie pup for my birthday and apparently the guy we got her from didn't have her best interest in mind. He sold her to us when she was 6 weeks old and I've come to find out on here that this is not recommended and I would LOVE any and all information anyone has to share with me to make certain she grows up happy and healthy. Thank you all in advance

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Hopefully one of our breeders will see this soon. As a non breeder the only advice I have is make sure she is eating every 3-4 hours and have nutrical on hand in case she goes hypoglycemic. Make sure you read up on the signs of hypoglycemia.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Well, has she had a vet check yet? Be careful about taking her outside, most good breeders do not want the puppy to touch the ground until they have had all their shots, and this would mean 16 weeks. You aren't even allowed to touch a puppy that young without washing you hands. I would be worried about food right now, is she eating okay? Call your vet and set up a shot schedule, take her in a carrier and don't let her walk on the floor of the vet office. I wouldn't start crate training until she's 12 weeks, I'd keep her in an x-pen with a pee pad because that's how she'd be kept if she was with her mother. You will most likely have more training, socialization and biting issues, but these can be taken care of closer to 12 and 16 weeks. Right now, your dog's physical safety should be your number one concern. Don't change foods too frequently as this can cause upsets, and you may have to add water to kibble, if she doesn't have her teeth.

| She is like a tiny baby right now; in addition to making sure she is eating and drinking; make sure she gets LOTS of rest. I'm sure more knowledgeable people will chime in.

| I recomend her being kept in a xpen, and making sure that she is kept very warm these little ones can get chilled easly, i would also give her some goats milk at her young age, you can buy it at walmart or krogers it is located with the other canned milks mix it 50/50 water and leave dry food available to her at all times. as others have already said keep her inside until she has had her shots and i would never let a vet give more than one shot at the time, sometimes they rush the rabies shot and it makes it hard on the babies. i wait until 5 to 6 months before giving a rabies

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | YORKIE PUPPY CARE GUIDE - For New Parents! Please see this sticky in the YT Library Just so you know 6wks is way too young for any breed of dog to be taken home. They should still be with their Mom's. Food and safe environment right now are very key. Before you go to the vet brush up on the immunization protocol for yorkies, again this can be found in the YT library. Also I always take my Yorkie into the vets in a crate. Get one if you don't have one, and travel with your baby in that crate. An expen is a great idea for your pup. So she can play a little, sleep when she wants to, has free access to water and food 24/7. Don't overhandle her, and don't allow any children to play with her yet. She is too young for that interaction.

| Hey I'm glad you posted in the breeder section. I knew there would probably be more specific suggestions (like the goats milk) to be found here. Hopefully, some more will chime in. I'm going to bump this thread up again. I am really routing for you and Glitter! |

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Hi and welcome to YT. I am not a breeder but I did bring my Poppy home at 6 weeks old (was told she was older) and because I didnt trust the breeder to look after her properly, and the fact she was crawling with ear mites, I didnt give her back. So here is my experience... The pup will cry in the night for a good few weeks. They will do this because they are lonley and missing their mum and litter mates. Many people told me not to comfort her in the night but I couldnt help it, I did cuddle her until she fell back asleep. She did this for about a month before she slept through the night, I dont know if she took that long because I was comforting her maybe.. maybe not... Because she is so young she will need to go potty in the night. I recommend you buy her a pen and put her bed, water, food and toys at one end and a potty pad at the other end. You need to keep an eye on her weight and make sure she is gaining and you need to think about booking her in for her first shot in a couple of weeks time. Do not take her outside until she has had all of her shots. Her baby teeth will be coming through so make sure you keep a lot of chew toys out for her, you can get ones from the pet shop which you soak in water then freeze to help soothe her sore gums. Because she was taken from the litter too soon she will not have learned bite inhibition, this is something you will have to teach her. Do not think you are being kind by letting her gum at your finger, because once those sharp puppy teeth come through you will regret it and biting will be harder to stop. In regards to training I recommend you train her on pee pads straight away, you cannot expect her to remember much until she is around 4-5 months old but you still need to teach her now. Watch for the potty signs (sniffing/circling) and put her straight on the pad. When she potties on the pad PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE. If you catch her in the act going potty elsewhere just say NO and move her straight to the pad. If you find a mess but dont catch her in the act dont make a fuss just clean it up. You will need to buy her a harness because yorkies are prone to a collapsed trachea which can be brought on my walking her on a leash and collar. A leash and harness is best, but you can still have her wear a collar for ID tags. Remember she needs to sleep just as much as she needs to play, puppies sleep a lot. You should take her for a vet check up straight away, and ask the breeder if she has been wormed. You will need to carry on the worming process. Good luck! EDIT: You can give her a goats milk but I would water it down and gradually put in less and less goats milk and more water. If you keep giving her just pure goats milk it may give her loose stool. (This is what my vet told me anyway) And for the crying in the night, I found Poppy slept better when I put a hot water bottle under her blankets and a ticking clock near her bed. (heartbeat)
