Advice needed to help calm my nerves

I seriously believe I just received a christmas miracle! After sitting in the vets office for a couple hours with the oxytocin not working, the vet decided to do an xray and ultrasound on Roxy.. we were preparing ourselves to go to the ER Vet clinic because my vet closes at 9.

WELL... it seems that we were all fooled (even the vet) because the xrays showed a possible 8th puppy. What we felt was not a puppy at all.. I am so thankful because I did not want Roxy to have to go thru surgery. The vet believes it's stool that will pass and that the oxytocin will actually help her not have an infection just in case some afterbirth was left (but I believe I got them all out)

So now Roxy is home and happy with her 7 little babies! I couldn't happier!

C-section is something we as breeders don't want, however, when a female and a pup's is on the balance and surgery is the only alternative to save their lives.....there is no other option.

Queston, wondering why the vet didn't do an x-ray initially, that would have given the vet indication how to proceed. POP (oxytocin) shot will assist her in expelling any dead tissue and help her with the let down of milk....

The vet went off the initial xray that was done a week ago. He say 7 maybe 8 puppies. So when you felt Roxy's belly it seriously felt like a puppy. I think we all fell into the category of just assuming it was a puppy and because it had been two hours after the last puppy they just started the oxytocin immediately.

Well I am so glad that you are all home. It is discouraging though, to me, that the vet didn't know there was not another puppy in there. He should have done the X-ray sooner. I know what you were feeling in there. I've felt that hard lump in there after they are finished whelping but it is not a puppy. And the fact that he was closing at 9 and so he was going to send you off? To me that just stinks. IMO, since Roxy was his patient he should have been committed to seeing her through even if it went past 9. I may be overly sensitive to this bc my last vet did something similar to my girl who needed a section. It was 4:00 and even though he assured me in our previous visits that he was qualified to do a section should she need it, on the day she needed it he informed me he was not doing a c section TODAY. Well I'm so happy that everything went well for Roxy. Good luck with the babies!!!

In hinds site I actually have to agree with you. At the time, I was convinced there was another puppy in there and because the vet has been trained he should have done an xray sooner. I'm not a big fan of the "closing at 9pm so you have to go to the ER clinic two blocks away", but honestly this is the best vet clinic in our area. Granted the vet that was helping me wasn't my normal vet (he's on vacation) but there are four vets in that office and two apparently agreed that I felt a puppy.

Honestly I'm just glad that Roxy and the puppies are ok. I would have done anything I needed to do to make sure she was ok, but i'm so relieved to know my baby doesn't have to go thru surgery. And this is the last litter I will ever whelp. I don't have the nerves for breeding and honestly the scare of losing my baby became so real to me tonight that I NEVER want to risk it again. She will be getting fixed after she's nursing this litter.

Alls well that ends well...next time do an xray from the get go...I was blessed with a vet who taught me how to palpitate for a retained puppy...so many things can seem like a pup, but they feel different.

When mom is settled, nursing and calm..as a rule they are done.

WOW 7 puppies??? All delivered safely through natural birth?? Indeed is a Christmas miracle!! Congratz!! Wish the mom and the pups best of luck! Must be exciting to have so many puppies around, but of course, it's also LOAD of work.

Yes, all the puppies were delivered naturally! Roxy did an awesome job! And you're not kidding about it being alot of work!! My main objective now is making sure that Roxy is getting enough nourishment and calcium to feed her babies and herself! She's turned into quite a picky eater. She will not even touch dry puppy food anymore.. or even some wet puppy food for that matter. I've been making a lot of chicken, rice (she's started not eating the rice now as well), scrambled eggs, and thank god for the whelping pudding mix because that's something I know she will take without hesitation!

Anyone have any good home made dog food recipes for her?
