| ![]() Met a fellow yorkie owner this morning at the doggie park. I started talking to and she was telling me about her breeder friend. She said she advised her a little while ago to let her puppies die??? ![]() |

| ![]() It sounds like open fontanel: Open fontanel in dogs | PetDoc As the pup gets older, some closes up by themselves. They can live a healthy normal life. Maybe your friend should consult a vet...

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | ![]() It sounds worse than Open Fontal, which is a soft spot where the scull hasn't fused together; with Open Fontal, skin at least, is covering the brain. You have to be very careful that there is no injury to the spot, and dogs that produced these puppies should never breed again. With the brain actually exposed, I would guess the chance of survival is small. I would hope the "breeder" gets the dog to the vet immediately. What does it take to get people to go to the vet? ![]()

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | ![]() I agree that it sounds worse than open fontanel, but rather more like a meningomyelocele (sorry- going blank on the term for when it protrudes out the fontanel as opposed to an opening in the spinal cord right now). I would hope that since it happened in more than one pup, the woman wises up and decides not to breed again. |

| ![]() Yes stuff coming out of the top of the head sounds a little different. I did tell her "in my opinion she should tell her to go to the vet". She looked at me and said well "in my opinion you should really mind your own business. She's been breeding dogs for about 15 years". I just picked up Hannah and walked away at that point. If that lady had been breeding for 15 years. Why in the world wouldn't she know what to do ![]() ![]() |

| ![]() That just sounds odd. So her opinion to kill the pups is more valid than yours, when she doesn't know what she's talking about? Nancy is right, the breeding pair that were used to breed these poor pups should be fixed and not used again. At least that's what I hope a responsible breeder would do.

| ![]() I don't think her opinion is more important than mine :-) Obviously she just thought I was a nosey body for giving my opinion, but maybe she was offended that I got up and left to the restroom. I kind of wear my expression on my face so maybe that bothered her. Who knows. I don't feel she is right, but I haven't a clue about something like that. Oh well, some people just get offended very easily. I feel sorry for anyone that buys the other pups even if they are ok, because I do think they will probably pass that issue down and maybe they won't have it, but later their babies may. Hopefully she will just spay/neuter the other babies (if they lived and rehome them as pets) |

| ![]() Oh Hannah I'm so sorry you had to deal w/such a rude person!!! I really don't understand how heartless some people can be. It's too bad you don't know who the breeder is so that you could call animal control on her...isn't there a law that requires her to seek medical attention for such a thing? I would think so. But all we can do is hope and pray that they do the right thing and the puppy isn't in pain. (((((Hugs))))) to you for dealing w/such a monster today!

| ![]() I think your advice was spot-on. Wouldn't common sense tell this lady to seek medical attention if there is stuff coming out of your pet's head???? Sheesh. |

Found the word I was looking for (don't you hate it when you have a word on the tip of your tongue and it won't roll off?) The condition I was trying to remember is encephalocele, or encephalomeningocele (the first refers to a sac filled with spinal fluid, the second refers to a sac with brain tissue coming through a defect in the skull). The condition isn't always fatal, but in surviving children there are nearly always severe neurological defects. Last edited by Rhetts_mama; 06-06-2010 at 02:03 PM. | |
