Senior Yorkie Talker | Heat cycle every 4 months. Normal or Abnormal?? I took Emma to the Vet yesterday to see if we are expecting. She has enlarged breasts, mood swings, sleeping more, and for the last two days she has been trying out her nesting skills. I thought for sure we were prego, but alas, no babies. He palpated and said he felt a little something but felt for sure it was just her intestines and not a puppy. He did tell me to still watch her over the next 7 to 10 days because if she were her belly should grow rapidly unless it is a very tiny puppy. We both feel she may be having signs of false prego. I explained to him that Emma just turned 2 in January and this is the first time we have bred her but her heat cycles are every four months. She was in heat in December and then again in April, when her first breeding was on the 17th.Anyway to get to the point, he said that if she continues to have these abnormal heat cycles, she may never get prego. I am okay with this, but I am wondering if a dog having heat cycles every 4 months instead of twice a year is really that abnormal. Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Senior Yorkie Talker | Thank you for your response. I am not sure if he is a reproduction vet or not. I know that probably sounds bad, but I will definitely check it out. What exactly could a repro Vet do for her? Thank you again. YorkieProud |

| Repro vets are well versed in canine reproduction. Can better tell you what is going on with your girl. A blood test would be the first order of business. This will give you initial insight to what is going on with your girl. Whether her every 4 month cycles are a hormonal imbalance or something else. There are other things that can be causing this issue. Infection with her reproductive organs, etc.

| My Rhianna had cycles every 4 months like clockwork . . .I tried two unsuccessful breedings before I had her spayed. When she was spayed I was told she had hydrometra which was fluid build up in her uterus and that could of been the cause of her not being able to conceive. I was also told that there wasn't really any way of knowing if this is why she cycled every 4 months, but that if I didn't have her spayed it would of turned to pyometra.

Senior Yorkie Talker | Would a blood test confirm hydrometra, or is that something that can only be detected with a spay. I love her very much and do not want to take any chances with her? I would love for her to have a least one litter, but if a spay is better for her then, that is what I will do. Thanks for the input. YorkieProud |

I really wanted a litter too, so I feel what you are saying, I would of had no way of knowing she had fluid build up . . .she didn't show any signs of a distended stomach or anything that would cause me alarm.

| heat cycles I had a beautiful girl that had the heat cycles close like that. She did not get pregnant, and my vet didnt find any reason. We spayed her because having heat cycles that close together was hard on her and I didnt want to breed her if it was a problem that would be passed on to her puppies. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Thank you all for your responses. I will do some checking around and see about getting some blood work done. If spaying is what is best, we will have it done with no reservations at all. Thank you all again. YorkieProud |
