| OK he made it through the night and he is getting around better and is not as limp. BUt I still can not get him to latchon to mom.WHy is this? Then I have someone telling me to give up that if mom pushes him away it is because he is sick and that when he grows up something might be wrong with him, but I cant just let him suffer,I feel if I am breeding I need to help in everyway that I can weather it be for mom or her babies. So fustrated

| He is one of 5, she does lick him and such when I try to ge him to latch, I have not seen any gain yet. He is onlytaking in about 1tablespoon and I dont think that is enough. I have heard bad things about tube feeding and dont even want to try that just because I dont know how.

| Having to hand feed a baby is not uncommon. It is one of the 'not easy' parts to breeding, but sometimes is necessary. Since your vet has seen him and found nothing wrong, there is no reason to give up on him. I have hand fed babies for 3 weeks straight and supplemented for another 2 weeks, but that is what the situation called for. He really must eat regularly or dehydration can set in quickly and then you can have real problems. The goat's milk with equal parts water and a little karo added works very well. It is much easier on the digestion than commercial formulas and some of those have been found unsafe. He should do fine as long as he's fed around the clock. If there are no health issues, he will turn the corner when he's stronger and nurse with the litter. You're just going to have to be 'co-mommy' for a while.

You really want to get him on track and plumping out ASAP. If he's not thriving, it's not recommended to put one through the tail docking and dew claw removal until they are. Not implying that he has to be nursing on his own, but that he really must be showing a gain before any procedure should be done. Best of luck...it's a lot of work but so worth it. He'll likely become your favorite as you bond with him with the feedings.

| I am still giving him milk witht he dropper. His stomach seems very swollen, notlike I have fed him too much because I know I have not. I went to feed him just now and it is very big and hard. I have rubbed it and stuff but I am now afraid to feed him as it looks like it is about to bust. He was in the vet again today and they gave him fluids because he was dehydrated a little. They couldnt tell much as we all know it is hard to tell what the end will be. Any ideas on this?

What are you feeding him and how much, how often? Have you seen Mom diapering him or seen him poop? Are you burping him after feedings? Is he feeding from Mom at all? How long has his stomach been swollen? It could be gas, he could be full or constipated. Though I've never used it, some here have recommended Mylicon, an over the counter gas relief product for babies. You could try diapering him by using a warm damp cloth on his rear to see if he'll poop. The fluids the vet gave him wouldn't cause this. I looked up the dosage for Mylicon for pups and I found 1/4 cc per pound so for such a small pup a couple drops should be enough.
