Help with 2 day old puppy Our lil puppy is just 2 days old he only weighed 3.2 oz at bitrth and now is at 2.9oz, I have been checking if he has been eating and everytime I check heis not, I got him to latch on this morning then this afternoon I foundhim all alone in a corner cold and about dead. I have heard that momma knows best butI have never seen it happen. I gothim warm and I tried to get him to latch on but he will not. GOt a bottle and he will not suck. I have an appointment for him but justwanting some opinions on this. |
half goat milk with half bottled water with a little light Kayro syrup and an eye dropper or tiny pet bottle that has the little nipples. Start giving that baby some milk, and keep him wrapped in a little sock and even carry him between your boobs or make a small sling and carry him that way. Let him be up against your body. I hope the Dr. doesn't give him medications of any kind. They are just too young and tiny for that. |
Thanks will try and I will tell the vet no meds |
should I put the dropper back towards his throat? |
carefull :(You have to be carefull not to get anything into his lungs. |
oh that sounds tricky then whats the trick?? I am leaving for the vet soon |
Here is a link that might help http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...er-remedy.html I am trying to see if any experienced breeders are around but don't think anyone is on right now. I'm going to see if this can get moved over to the Breeder forum. Hope you are able to save your little one.:( |
Warm the goat milk/water formula like you would for a baby. Fill the dropper and just let it drip into his mouth. He won't understand but will drink once he gets a taste. Try putting the dropper to the side of his mouth at first and just let a drop get into his mouth. He should get receptive. DON'T squeeze the dropper hard....just let a drop or two into his mouth at a time. Keep him upright while feeding. Be very careful not to let too much in his mouth at once or he'll aspirate. He should get used to it after a couple feedings. He needs to be fed every 2 hours. Burp him and gently rub his belly when done. Mom should do the diapering and will clean any dribbles of milk up. |

Keep in mind that mother's always know when there is something quite not right with a pup and will purposely push it to the side. Your vet will check for hydration and possibly Sub-Q the pup and maybe show you how to do it. 2 days of sub-Q may give this pup the time to develop the strength to suckle. |

I'm not a breeder and won't give advice, but I'm concerned with this statement. "I found him all alone in a corner cold and about dead." You do have them in some sort of whelping pen don't you? I hope someone can give you more information on this. From what I've read, keeping them warm is extremely important. Best of luck! |
Yea the corner of the welping pen. Vet said nothing major wrong and to feed him every hour bout 1/2 dropper to the whole and to try to see if he will latch onto mom before I feed him. I was worried about ids it clef plates or something where they can not suck (forgive my ignorance forgot the name)? Just glad nothing major Hope for the best. |

At this stage, he needs to eat every 2 hours and about 1 cc per ounce of weight (a full dropper is 1 cc). Since he missed some feedings, he may need to be fed more often for a couple of times to get him on track. If he doesn't latch on and nurse, you will need to feed him around the clock. He cannot go all night without eating. Here's a pic that shows a pup nursing well. You'll see that he's working the teat and his tongue is wrapped around and locked on it. Best of luck. |
I have a puppy formula recipe that I swear by... I will pm it to you. Good luck! |
