| Placenta question for breeders Harlie delivered her babies early this morning. she has a retained placenta, the cord is hanging from her. Should I try to pull it out? |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | no, don't you will only be able to take little fragments out and is not worth risking damage, do you have red rabsberry leaf tea or syrop? give her 1/2 a cup of the tea now and then 1/2 a cup for 3 days every other day, or follow the instructions in the bottle for the syrop, it will stimulate cleaning of the uterus and expulsion of the residue. if you still in doubt call your vet and see if he will give it an oxytocin shot. my vet is very against oxy use, I been using the tea for sometime now and it worked every time like a charm. it also helps with milk production. best of luck.. hugs, Carmen in nj |

| I strongly suggest that you monitor her temperature.

| MY opinion...grasp the strings with a paper towel, gently pull down toward the belly..it should slide out. I took my first few bitches to my vet when it happened to one of mine and he did exactly as I wrote...and told me to do the same next time and not bother him...he was a close friend and joked with me...never had a problem gently removing a placenta..and it must be done. PS..you can also massage the belly and draw it out like sauage from a casing...I have over 35 yrs of breeding experience and would never suggest anything all breeders do unless is safe..IMO Wednesday is too long for an after whelping check..24 hrs tops. Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I was told never to pull on it, so I don't, my mentor told me that she lost a girl by trying to pull a placenta out, if you in doubt and the tea don't seem to work in a couple of hours call your vet and take her in. that is what I go by. I know you ladies have a ton more experience than me, but I would NEVER pull on a string that is still inside the mom without a contraction. best of luck to you.. hugs, Carmen in nj |

| I am not a breeder, but I can tell you I would be calling my vet.

I thought I had read somewhere to never pull it out, that is why I asked. I've never before had one that I could get ahold of. Looks like there are different thoughts on that practice Anyway I gave her the rasberry syrup and within a half hour it was out. thanks for all of the advice. I learn something new with each litter. | |
