Default HELP!!!!!! asap

My female is having her first litter. She gave birth to a little boy 6 hours ago. She hasn't had a puppy since. I didn't have her x-rayed, so it's hard telling how many more are still inside - I feel at least one more.

What is a reasonable amount of time to wait in between deliveries???/

Please answer ASAP!!

Is she still having contractions?

This happened to my girl this week. I ended up taking her to the vet because she was not contracting and started throwing up blood. We had to do an emergency c-section and spay.

I pray that your girl is going to be alright.

Hi Amber, first of all congratulations on the safe whelping of your little boy.

My Scarlett had four beautiful little girls last month. The first pup came on a Wednesday night about 11:30. The second pup was born at 1:30 am on Thursday. We both went to sleep and when I woke up at 7:30 on Thursday morning, nothing was going on. I called my vet and she suggested that I get Scarlett up and walk her to try to get things going again naturally. After about an hour of walking things started happening again, and the third pup was born at 11:30 followed by the fourth shortly after l:00 pm.

Basically 10 hours passed between the second and third pups. Because she was not in active labor during that time, Dr. Amy was not concerned at all. Our rule of thumb is always.

To be on the safe side, I would recommend that you alert your vet so that they will be ready in case you need them.

if she has been pushing or having hard contractions all this time, you need to go the vet. if it just seems like she is resting, then you are probably alright. Rule of thumb: When in doubt, call your vet. Congratulations on your new baby.

First of all, I'd like to apologize for not responding. I never got email notification that anyone had responded to my thread - and so I figured I got lost in the shuffle.

As I mentioned before, Cricket had her little boy around 6 am. She seemed to be resting and not in active labor for many hours after that, but I got concerned 6 hours later when nothing else was going on. I still felt another pup in her - although it wasn't moving around like it had been the night before. I called the vet. They told me not to be concerned (as many of you mentioned here - thank you) unless she was "bearing down" and having contractions for more than an hour.

Well.... shortly after posting on here and calling the vet - I went back to check on Cricket. I could see a head coming out - but it kept slipping back inside. I had to help her deliver with the next contraction. A female puppy was delivered 6 and a half hours after the boy pup. Sadly, she was gone. I worked on her for what seemed like FOREVER - rubbing, suctioning, breathing air into her lungs... all to no avail. I felt so bad about it. I felt bad for Cricket. I felt bad for her little brother. I've never had a pup die before - but I know they say to expect it sometimes.

Funny thing is - this little female pup was the most "active" in her mom's belly. She laid to the right of Crickets rib cage and the boy to the left.

I noticed when she was born that there wasn't alot of fluid in the sac. I believe the sac ruptured - perhaps when the boy was being delivered??? ( I should mention here that the boy was born BREECH )

I'm not sure what went wrong. She was fully developed and I could see nothing wrong with her. I weighed her just to see - and she weighed exactly what her brother weighed at birth = 5.2 oz.

Thank you all for your responses. Sorry I didn't get back on here sooner, but I never got an email notification.

Ok... this might sound a little morbid, so I apologize in advance... but when you lose a puppy, what do most of you do with the little one? I took the pup to the vet for cremation. Just curious what others do in that situation.

Cricket and the little boy are doing just fine. Cricket seems to be a great Mamma dog so far. She is very attentive and wants NOTHING to do with anything else except tend to her little boy. I've even had to hand feed her because she doesn't want to take the time away from him to eat! Getting to to go potty is a real trick! I have to put her outside and close the door REAL quick or she'll run inside. LOL!! My Maggie did the same thing the first few days after birth.

Thanks again everyone!!

Amber

Thank you soooo much... it's a very sad time, for sure. I'll give Cricket and her little boy LOTS of hugs and attention. Both are resting now and seem to be very happy.

I guess I'm feeling a bit guilty for not rushing off to the vet - but according to what my vet said over the phone, she wasn't showing signs of active labor and I was assured things were ok. They weren't. I should mention I run a childcare business in my home and leaving on a whim is nearly impossible. I love my job because I'm able to be at home and give my yorkies all the time and attention they need (plus they are GREAT with the kids). I couldn't stand to have a "normal" 9 - 5 job and leave my babies for the entire day. You take the good with the bad I suppose.

Congratulations on your new baby boy. I am sorry for your loss of the girl. Sometimes vets miss it and we have to go by our gut. You have learned a valuable lesson. If you breed again, have someone lined up for your day care, just in case. I know in your situation it is hard just to rush out the door but I know you will have someone willing to help next time. Six hours without a puppy, in most cases means the pup is in trouble and if there are other babies behind the one that has died or is in trouble, then you could lose your whole litter. Again, I am sorry for your loss. You did the best you could in your circumstances.

Congrats on your little boy. I lost one of my female puppies on August 2. She lived for 3 agonizing days but ended up dying anyway. It was awful. We buried our puppy in the back yard in a little wooden box with a blanket - the whole bit. However, I think cremating is probably a better idea. There is a pet crematorium right here in my town. I'm sorry about your puppy.

Oh... Sookie... I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. That must have been really difficult. I can only imagine those 3 agonizing days watching her slip away. My heart breaks for you. I'm so sorry.

I have a good way of looking at the lose of a puppy. For every child that is in heaven, a puppy is needed. Makes me feel better to believe that anyways...

I'm still so new to this site - but my experience so far has been superb! Thanks everyone for your kind words. It really means alot to me!!

Oh my goodness; how did I miss this thread!? I am so very sorry to hear about losing the little girl. I dread the day that I will have to experience what you did, but do realize that is a real possibility. With the experience of only two whelps so far, luckily both have been successful.

Congratulations on the little boy; it is good to hear that he and mama are doing well. My female Halle just had a singleton boy last Wednesday so maybe we can watch our little boys grow up in the next few months through sharing pictures.
I realize now that this is how I missed seeing this thread; I did have a very busy day on Wednesday with a variety of things going on, then when I did come here I was busy posting pictures of our 1 week old Oscar.

Hope to see pictures of your new little one soon!!!
WISHING YOU A BELATED BUT HEARTFELT CONGRATULATIONS!
