| I was not asking how much for my stud but just out of curiosity wondering how others decided what to charge. I would consider that a personal matter and would pm respected breeders for their opinions.

YT Addict | I am sorry I hope you did not take what I was saying wrong. I was just trying to point out what all you would have to look at in the stud, that every one would be different. Sorry if I upset you. I was just giving my input. |

You are right, her stud is not a Champion, even though he is from a Champion background. Since that is the case, she should charge her fee according to her geographical location. Here's another thought, and a rule that some very reputable breeders use, if the stud has not been proven, the possibility of not charging a stud fee should be considered. As far as what I think she should charge, I think she should determine that herself.

Here's something I found: The rule of thumb on stud service prices is the fee is the equivalent of the price of a puppy. This may vary based on the record of the dog's previous production results, the showing record, and your desire to have him used for the first time. The cost of the shipping of the bitch should not alter the stud fee. That is merely one of the expenses of being a breeder.

| When you stud out your male there are always risks that your male could sire a liver shunt puppy or a puppy with other genetic defects. Does the stud owner take any responsibility for this? Is anything ever put in the stud contract to cover these issues? How do other breeders handle this? |

Producing a LS puppy is devistating, but it's how you as a breeder handle these situations.

| I wish more breeders would quit attempting to sweep these situations under the table. Should a situation arise, both the sire and dam should not ever be risked at being bred again Until a DNA Marker is found, you're never sure if one or the other is a carrier, the way the genes shook up.

| possible future breeder Mardelin: You seem very knowledge about breeding yorkies. I have a 7 mo/5 lb yorkie. She is my first yorkie and I have fallen in love with her. I was thinking about letting her have one litter at some point in the future but I have concerns regarding breeding, as I only want her to be safe and healthy. I have been told not to breed yorkies if they are 5 lbs or under. Per the weight charts she has been pretty much on track that she'll be six pounds when fully grown. What is your advice regarding safe weight/size for the potential mother to be? Thanks |

| what other information do you need? Her parents were both 5 lbs. She seems to be in excellent health... What does one need to know exactly about their dog to make sure the dog and her puppies are healthy before allowing them to breed? Thank you. |

Does she come from a line of free whelpers Have all the necessary tests been performed on her and the stud. Bile Acids, hips and knees x-rayed, eyes and ears tested. Are you willing to lose her and the litter? Why do you want to breed her? Have you studied everything you can about breeding, genetics, whelping? The yorkie is not a breed you can breed pheno type to pheno type and know what you're going to get.
