| New mommy questions. Hi everybody! I don't post much but I do lurk and this site has been very helpful for me. My Yorkie, Scout, just gave birth to two puppies yesterday, 7/17. They seem to be very healthy, they love to eat and squirm around! I am concerned for their mommy though. Let me just say that her giving birth yesterday came as a complete surprise to us. She was due on the 21st and showed no real definite signs of labor. The only reason we knew she was in labor was my fiance going to the bathroom at 4:30 am to see a puppy on our bathroom floor. She gave birth to number 2 at 8:30 am. She is being very aggressive with my fiance and I. I read on here that that can be normal, to just give her her space and just pop in from time to time to see how the puppies are doing, which we are doing. The real problem is that she hasn't really been eating or drinking much. I hand fed her about 4-5 little hand fulls of food yesterday and she did drink a fairly good amount of water too but that is about it. I just brought her some cottage cheese and left it in there with her. I've noticed that she hasn't gone to the bathroom as far as I can tell and that has me worried as well. We called the vet yesterday morning because we were concerned that the puppies were not latching on but that eventually corrected itself (they never let go! lol ) and also, the after birth of the second puppy never came out. The vet said that either it will come out or it will be absorbed back in. We have no way of knowing if either happened because she will not let us near her at all. We're lucky if we can sit on the floor close by. We don't want to stress her out at all but we are becoming concerned. Any helpful advice? I'm sorry if this post sounds disjointed but I am in a rush and wanted to get this out there. I won't be around for a few hours so if I don't respond right away, please don't think I'm giving the brush off. Thanks in advance for any advice I may get! |

You'll have to hand feed your girl. Make a batch of canned goats milk = parts of distilled water, 1 egg yolk beaten and 1 tablespoon of karo syrup. At this point in time your mom and babies should be off the floor and in a warm place....chilling can occur. The first week after whelping is crucial for pups and mom, they must be monitored constantly. Temps and weights taken, moved around on each breast. Make sure that all pups are being pottied and not being pushed off the nipples.

Any questions, anything unusual....don't be afraid to ask. There are plenty of people on here to help. Watch for oderous discharge. Increase mommies food intake: Food makes milk. Most think when the whelping is done, mother takes over completely. The next 3 weeks will be your most busiest time......So, put on your mommy hat. Keep the pups and mom out of drafts, temp in the room should be about 80 degrees, pups can not retain their own body temp for about 3 weeks.....So, take their weights and temp daily. Keep mother's breasts clean and flowing.....Everytime she potties, clean her private area and her breast with baby wipes before putting her back in with babies. The first few days she won't want to leave them. So you'll have to physically take her out to potty. Eventually she'll do it on her own. When you take the pups in for tail docking and dew claw removal, don't take her with you. It'll stress her out.

| Keep mom in pups in a quiet area of the house. Don't allow visitors around her or the pups until they've had their shots. Make people take off their shoes when entering your house.

| Okay.. I just got off the phone with the vet. I had to go in and place a towel over Scout for me to be able to pick her up. I checked to see if anything was protruding from her vagina and saw nothing, it looked pretty much as it did before she had the puppies. The vet told me if there was nothing protruding then she must have taken care of the after birth. She told me what signs to look for if something may be going wrong (and gave me the number for the emergency Vet if there is). She is in no way lethargic, her coloring is fine, and will eat if I hand feed her. The puppies are eating well and Scout is a very good mommy. I will be bringing her outside to get some exercise and to get the bowels moving. I will also get what I need for the whelping pudding (I think that's what it's called..lol) but for this immediate moment, I will give her some cottage cheese. The puppies are nice and warm in there little bed and are snuggling up to mommy as we speak. They are in a secluded room where they will not be disturbed unless I'm checking up on them. Thank you everyone for such great advice! I couldn't have done this without the help of Yorkie Talk!! Thanks again! |

Just as a side note, I have Scout and the puppies upstairs in their own bedroom so, to my surprise, she ventured out and was hanging out on the stairs! I guess she's been missing the action down here! lol. I just went up to check on the puppies just in case she was trying to get my attention but there they were, cuddling up to each other. They are so cute! | |
