| Questions-newborn puppies Hi: its me again! all of your responses have been great. I wish there was a book out there that listed all the questions and answers that I have found there. I have read a number of things online regarding new yorkie puppies but can't fine the what may seem like non-important questions but for a first timer are. So here we go: my list of questions: Miracle gave birth to two puppies one is smaller than the other, actually the boy is smaller than the girl. it seems as though she only nurses them one at a time. the smaller one SEEMS like he is having a harder time latching on. I was told to look at his tummy, if its flat he is not getting enough. his is round. Is this true? When do they stop whining? We set up the whelping box (cage/box) in our bedroom because it is quiet, warm and where she sleeps. I have put her food and water there and close the door when I leave for work during the day. However, they whine quite a bit a night. So just wondering when I will sleep again? She is still cleaning the puppies? is this normal? I think it is but not sure? She does leave the room for a little while to run around the house. She looks for me to come up there the minute she hears me come home and wants me to stay there with her for a while. is this normal? She does like to show her puppies off. She also allows me to touch her babies. She is not drinking a lot of water but she is drinking water, she was panting on and off last night, is this ok? She moves around a lot in the box, is this normal? Any advise about any little thing I should look out for or that she should be doing would be most helpful.

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | I am a little concerned about her panting. Have you had her calcium levels checked since whelping? If not, I would strongly suggest you do. Not to scare you, but I almost lost my Gellica 2 weeks after giving birth to Eclampsia (calcium deficiency) - and her panting was the first sign.

| Newborn puppies should not be crying a lot. Is it to warm or to cold in their whelping box? Years ago before I started using the bottomless whelping boxes I would be woke up a lot during the night because the pups would get lost under the bedding and not able to get to momma, could that be happening? Or is the momma leaving the box during the night? Puppies sense when the momma is not near and they will cry if she gets out of the box. It is common for the mommas to pant off and on after having puppies. The milk production makes them hot. You want to make sure the room temperature is not too hot for the momma though because that can cause her to make less milk. A round belly does not necessarily mean they are getting enough. If the belly seems big but the rest of the puppy is skinny then the pup could have bloating problems. The best way to tell if they are gaining would be to weigh them daily. If the puppy is not latching on then it could have a cleft palate. Try to encourage the puppy to eat and make sure it is able to suck out milk from the mom. You should be giving the momma a calcium supplement twice a day in addition to feeding her about 4 times a day. It is normal for the momma to lick the puppies a lot. She will lick their bottoms to stimulate them to pee and poop. How many hours a day are you leaving her and the puppies alone while you work? I hope it is not to long. A lot of things could happen. Has she been to the vet for a checkup since the pups were born? Have you taken mommas temperature. Please monitor her temperature because sometimes they can get a uterus infection after having puppies. Also watch her breasts, if they start getting hard or swollen she will need to be on antibiotics. |

| You will need to take the puppies to the vet in the next 2-3 days if you want their tail to be docked. So make sure the vet check and deworm them. If you aren't sure if the puppies are eating properly form the mom, buy some milk replacement from petstore and start helping with the feeding. |

I took them yesterday and had their tales docked. They did not deworm them as I though they did this when they were older. The girl is 4.4 oz and the boy is/was 3.0 oz. They were concerned because the boy is so little. I did go get replacement milk but as suggested I am working on making sure he is nursing. I weighed him today and his is 3.3 oz. I know there could be a different in scales so I also weighed the girl she is 4.6 oz, so even if its off, it not by that much because the girl is close. So I think things are improving. How much time should/can she spend away from her babies? She still doesn't seem to be drinking a lot of water.

| I would weight the babies at least twice a day and that will give you an idea. As long as they are continuing to gain, I would not be too concerned. I found that for the first month, as long as Zoe was doing a good job taking care of them, the puppies did not wake me at all. If they are crying, I would think it's either they are too warm or too cold or they are hungy. Although I have heard of other things like gas or similar problems. Zoe did not leave her puppies for the first week other then to go potty and to eat, I had to hand feed her in her bed with the babies. I also offered her water too in bed. I don't think you can spoil them too much right now. Also, are you taking her temperature every day? I think you should still be doing that as that can often be the first sign of some other problem ie retained placentas. Good luck! Hope everything is ok! |

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | If she is not panting all the time, then she may just be warm or tired. Other signs will include lethargy and stiffness in the legs. Keep weighing the babies daily to make sure they are gaining weight and not losing any.

She had her POP shot, I thought that got rid of anything in case she didn't eat both placentas. The Vet gave her that and an antibotic but I will continue to take her temp. Can you please tell me the normal range again. If I feed her the water, she does take it and I agree with you, they can never be to spoiled during this time. This is her 4th litter, the other 3 she lived with her previous owners, we have only had her for a week so although she has taken to me and my daughter its still new. She likes for me to come and sit up in the bedroom with her.

Please, don't worry I would never leave them alone for long periods of time. In fact, I am already trying to figure out who can come here when my other daughter goes in to have her baby.

| Just had pups a week ago Hi all: I have a question, we just got a yorkie almost two weeks ago, she had her babies last Tuesday, morning. Not sure if this normal but she seems to be wanting to wander around and come downstairs away from her babies more often than she should. This being new to me, I really am no sure what or how much time away from her babies is normal. She is feeding them and taking care of them, she seems like she is doing a good job with the exception of wanting out of the room. Is this normal? Also, the vet said to put a bag a rice in the cage, so they think it's mom. Should I do this all the time or just whenever she leaves the cage? thank you in advance for your help.

| Her behavior is perfectly normal. At two weeks the pups are just nursing every few hours so mom gets bored just sitting around. I always let my mommas come in the living room off and on all day when they have pups but at night I leave the mother in the x-pen with the pups. I always just leave a little fleece blanket in the whelping box with the pups. It will have mommas scent on it. |

But it hasn't been two weeks, they were just born on Tuesday. Another, question the Esbilac. I have not given this to her yet, as I have just learned about it, do I give her just the powder on/in her food? I believe that is correct but I want to make sure I do the right thing.
