| Is she dying? we had a litter born on the first of this month 4 boys and 1 girl. they all were 5 and 6 oz at birth and progressivly have been gaining weight. now its been 11 days we have our little girl and she is still going up but very slowly. she is now about 7 oz and was 5 at birth. the boys are now 11 and 12. im wondering if she is dying. yesterday she was putting out a little cry about every 5 to 10 seconds and was breathing very hard. the pup just isnt thriving. she has lost interest in nursing from mom probably due to her brothers that are twice her size bullying her out. we have been bottle feeding her and have been keeping a close eye on her temp. but when she is with the whole litter she will move away from all the other puppies and just lay by herself. she stopped whining lastnight after a few good hours of good warmth from a heat pad and food from the bottle but today she has just been very limp. we can see her breathing and every time i feed her she will feed. is she just slowly dying or is it just going to take a week for her to finally get her strength back and wanting to be a puppy again. anything will help. oh also the vet said that she looked fine and only suggested that we suppliment her feeding just to make sure she was getting enough. thanks |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | Wow, I sure hope not. I don't really know the answer to your question, but didn't want to not post after reading your thread. I'm hoping that she is just "the runt" as they say, and a slow starter. Sounds like you are doing all you can......have you given her free time to nurse from mom without the boys around to bully her? I would suggest doing that if you haven't already. Let her nurse BEFORE the boys do. Keep her warm. I will say some prayers that she perks up and starts gaining a bit more. Hugs to you for all you're doing to help her along.

| I had one of my litter that did not gain weight early on. The vet even thought I would lose him. We had lost the mother and they were all bottle fed. I had to feed the small baby with a syringe because he just did not nurse. But I did it, and also gave him a little Nutrical for Puppies occasionally if I worried he was looking too "limp." Like you, I got out the heating pad and made sure he was extra warm. I fell asleep with him on my chest a couple of times. One of the YT mentors suggested I switch from the formula to goat's milk. He finally started thriving! He's 10 weeks old now and is getting onery and chasing his sisters around. He is chewing on my toes as I type right now. So, don't give up on your little one. Just be very attentive, feed some goat's milk or expressed milk from the momma, every two hours like clock work. I set the alarm to make sure I would not sleep through. Keep him extra warm and give him some loving. A little praying pays off too!

| If you feed her every two hours night and day she might come around.. I tube fed out gracie as she was beginning to dehydrate. we ended up doing this night and day for two full weeks before she began suckling on her own.. and we caught it on time.. leaving the other puppies does not sound good tho, and normally a baby that cries alot does not make it....but keep feeding her and keep her warm.. if you need to separate her then do so..IMO only.. they will fade so fast if they are not getting enough fluid..if her temp drops it is extremely hard to get it back up fast enough..I bought puppy formula and made sure her feeding were totally consistant.. I am sure some will tell you more.. this is just my own experience I talk about..am sending prayers she will do ok.. anne Last edited by mypreciouspups; 05-11-2009 at 07:00 PM. |

| Ya know gracie is 4 on may 23rd.. I cannot remember.. but will certainly find out quick for you if you want me to.. but as I am looking at the syringe I used a 1 cc syringe..put 0.2 in milk replacer.. when you hold your baby girl.. hold her to look at you.. look at her belly.. what I was told is she should look like a little pear.. if her belly bulges that little bit you know it is full.. watch the other babies.. look at them..keep a watch on her tummy.. as she grows she will need more..it needs to get to be a bigger rounder pear as she gets older.. and weigh her before you feed and after.. keep track of the time the amount of milk and how much she weighs before and after feeding.. you need to see her not go down one tad.. you should see a weight gain each day.. I can talk to you easier.. if you need me.. I will help with what I can only due to my tube feeding experience.. and thank god it has not been something I have had to do often.. You can send me your phone number by pm if you would like.. and what I do not know I will surely help you find out..it has been 4 years.. but I did it and the vet could not beleive we kept her alive..it can be done.. and my thoughts were I had to do what I could... anne |

When you feed the puppy be sure it is on its tummy not on its back like you might feed a human baby. Also if you see the puppy is not nursing well, you might want to take to the vet to have her tubed. He will show you how to feed by tube yourself. Thankfully, I never had to do that -- the syringe worked well for me. Don't feed too much -- it can get in their lungs and cause pneumonia. If milk comes out their nose, slow down. Good luck to you and the little one!

I had one happen to me and had not experienced that before.. took him to the vet and she subq'd him and kept him to watch him over the night.. but did not feel he would make it.. he died in the middle of the night..you did your best and you could not have done anymore.. I am sorry.. for this is always so hard for us to deal with... love those other babies and keep them going.. god had other ideas for her is all I can say... again my heart goes out to you... anne |

| Do you think that she might have gas, and that's causing her to be in pain (crying)? Maybe that's why she's pulling away, and not nursing so much. Make sure that she is not constipated. I give the pups some benebac (petsmart) (probiotics) ,helps with GI issues. Give her some alone nursing time with mom. Did you try the boiled liver juice? I hope she feels better soon. And this is probably hard on you too!! Cheryl |

| Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss. Sometimes, it is what it is. The breathing that you described was something I've not seen, you did all you could. Cheryl |
