| Tail docking twist/cut The vet just "cut" our puppies tails and put 2 soluble stiches (X) in the tail. I asked about "twisting" them off. She called it crush and twist and said it was ok, but cut and stitched across pulls the hair up around the tail on all sides and scar is almost undetectable. They allowed me to watch and it would be quite easy to do at home with just a few tools. But, not for me! I'll run them to the vet! Jeanne |

| Ohhhh, it would hurt ME too much to do it myself. It hurt me to watch the vet. LOL. But, they just used a big pair of scissors, dropped novacane on it after cutting and put 2 little stitches in. They touched the dew claws with silver nitrate after taking them off - again with big scissors. No bleeding at all. Jeanne |

| tails I have done both methods...believe me "clamp and twist" is so easy, fast and bloodless. When I cut and stitched, I got bleeding. Another reason I like the clamp method is the way the hair drapes over the healed end..stitches can leave a scar and the hair does not grow in that area..it may be small, but I notice the drape. The ends of gthe skin are gathered into a pucker. Crushing leaves no scar tissue. Plus, I can work the clamp between the cartiledge so fast..the tail needs to be pulled gently out and the clamp slips into that groove between the cartiledge..cutting with scissors slices through it, not between it...but that is JMO and the way my pup suffer less. |

| I certainly bow to your experience. I have none! My vet said she'd do it either way but she preferred cutting it. It looked easy enough but I wouldn't try EITHER method! Jeanne |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | I've seen the clamp method and scissor method. Anyone that can do their own pup's tails are more woman than I am. I just start crying! It's just too traumatizing for me!

| i like the clamp/twist method. does seem to be less of a scar versus the cut method. i've had both done over the yrs, but have now went completely with the twist method. and you will get less bleeding with the twist i believe. great topic! |

| I am just getting back on line. Big eye boo-boo has almost cost me my vision. Anyhow, I used the clamp and twist on tails. Decided to do it after I watched the vet do 2 other methods. I like the end of the tail closed completely so the hair grows drapes over it. With my litter of BiewersXPartis, I keep thinking I must have forgotten to do something. Mercy me, this litter is so easy to care for and WONDERFUL to watch .. I am totally hooked on my multi-colors. A friend's husband calls the female Biewer they co own Tecky. I asked why and he said it is because she is TECHNICOLOR!! |

| Docking time. Sophie just had her first litter. We have 2 boys and a girl. I need to dock their tails. How do I do this? I have read about banding and about clamp and cut. Do I use hemostats or scissors? |

agree!!! I learned clamp/twist from my vet employer way back in 1966....never dreamed I would be doing it some day at home, but all those tails I did at that vet office certainly paid off! And the biggest bonus of all is the way the tip heals doing it this way....no "blunt, squared off cut" across the end. | |

Here is a good video of how to do it. This is how I do mine however I leave the clamp on for about a minute before I dock them. And then I leave the hemostats on for a minute after they are docked. This way there is no blood. And use clotisol to be on the safe side. I will never again let a vet do my pups' tails. I was so traumatized the first time I took them to a vet and had it done.
