HELP!!! Tiny boy with no cord!

My friend called me yesterday to let me know her yorkie was in labor. I went over later on and found out that the cord and been cut too short. The puppy is still alive and for the most part eating. I encouraged my friend to make sure he eats often and make sure he stays warm. Im not sure what else to tell her or what to do. She is hesitant to take it to the vet because of the costs. She is afraid it will pass after spending a lot of money. I talked to her this am and she says it latched on last night two times and is still syringe feeding it. You can see a whole in its belly where the cord should be. Please if any of you have ever encountered this please share your advise and ideas. I'm thinking to more encourage her to take it to the vet today since he lived through the night. He is obviously a fighter. I dont want to give up on this lil guy. If I have to take it to the vet myself I will. Again any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. I am wondering if maybe any of you have encountered this and the puppy lives or passes. Please share your experiences.

Definitely get to the vet and get it sewn up. If it is just from the cord being ripped off too short and not a birth defect there is no reason he should not be OK. If it is not from physical trauma it may be some form of a midline defect but if it is small there is no reason he should not be OK if it is repaired. If it is something he was born with you will also want to check for a cleft palate with is another midline defect. Did she let mom cut the cords? Sometimes moms get a bit too vigorous and take a nip from the skin as well (not often, but sometimes), it should be able to be corrected. I doubt very much that it would be an expensive visit, it is not like he is going to do an actual surgery on a puppy that young, should just be a few quick stitches. When he is older he may have a hernia if the muscle is not repaired now but that can be corrected when he is neutered.

Sorry, but your friend's mentality of not wanting to spend a lot of $ in case he passes anyway is really disturbing. I mean, how much is an office visit? If a visit to examine and at least discuss options is too much, she should get out of breeding dogs now.

We all pay for vet care in HOPES of a positive outcome but I don't know a single person, let alone a breeder, who witholds vet care based on the potential risk of a negative outcome. Puppies are not a profit/loss statement.

Sorry but this just upset me a lot.

Thanks for your help. I've already called two vets and am taking him as soon as I get off work. The vets stated an office visit is 50.00 so I can spare that to spare this lil guy. Yeah it looked to me that the mamma just got over excited and pulled the cord or chewed it to much. I cant bare the idea of just letting it suffer and after reading the first post it gives more hope that it can be helped. Thanks and anymore advise is still welcome.

Ok so I took the lil guy to the vet and he passed away. The vet looked him over and was quite surprised by his color and so on. She continued to look him over checked for a cleft palate. All in good health other then his cord . She then started squeezing his belly and what we though was milk started to pour out. The dr took a swab of the fluids and took a look under the microscope. She came back and said its not an infection and by this time the puppy had took a real turn for the worse. He wasnt holding his head his mouth wouldnt stay shut. It was just awful. Anyhow I talked things over more with the vet and she said his condition was probably internal and had nothing to do with the mama cutting the cord too short. She assumed it was a diformity and suggested putting him down. Well before I could say yes or no I want to try he passed. Please say a prayer for the lil guy he was a true fighter and I wished there was mroe I could do to save him.

Well you did the right thing to take him to the vet. The rest has to be what is best. I know it had to be very hard after taking the extra step to take him to the vet to get help.

Can I say this without sounding mean ? I think your friend needs to not breed her yorkie again. When a someone is responsible for bringing more puppies into the world - they need to give them the care they need at the TIME they need it.

Not getting them vet care isn't an option ...especially when there's an obvious problem.

She's lucky to have you for a friend.

Thanks for the comments. I do understand where you all are coming from. I to am happy I did what I did. I couldnt even think straight knowing that puppy was suffering. I dont really care about my friend I told her she should not breed from the get go. She is not so organized as I'd expect a breeder to be. Dogs and puppies take A LOT of time. And if you want to breed you need to have it together to be sucessful. One of the reasons I dont breed anymore. After breeding a couple times I found it I was better as an animal lover only. Dont get me wrong breeding is fun but I find myself as a lover best. I hope to one day start breeding again but thats sometime later on. I got burned from a breeder I thought was reputable, and I got really discouraged after all things got settled with that. I now just have my yorkies and love them to death. They are very spoiled and a big part of my family.
