Nice thread. I always wondered why people bred their dogs if not to sell. Why would you breed a dog if you weren't trying to make money. WHY? I only have 1 yorkie. I have no intention of ever breeding. If I was gonna show, which I'm not, then maybe I would make sure he was the best. But I don't think people are gonna breed just to have a house full of yorkies. Unless you're a super nice person and want to share your love for them. I love my little one. And I don't know what a back yard breeder is. But I meet the person I got my pup from. Great people. I got him for 450.00. Meet his mother and father. Got all the papers. Went out to the backyard to get him. LOL. So what is the reason for breeding if not trying to make big money???. WHY???. I know you want to keep the breed alive, But pretty soon you're not gonna be able to give them away. Yeah I remember those good old days when a puppy was just given to a good home. Well color me stupid if i'm wrong.

Why would I breed a yorkie if I wasn't out to make money??? Well when I started out I just wanted a Yorkie to love and care for!! I have 4 daughters 2 who are grown, 2 still young I choose not to have anymore children and my last daughter was in school and I was feeling lonely even tho I worked part time so we got Teddy and I wanted a female to start with but the breeder we got him from didn't have any, so we found Tiffanie and I choose to breed for I wanted to care for them as I did my children!!! Why do some of us have children??? Do we intend on making money off of our children??? Why no, we spend more on our children then anything we've ever had in our lifetimes. It's the love of the breed, the joy they give U when U have helped deliver a beautiful litter of babies, it's such as the joy of U giving birth to your children, this love is a love that no other can ever fill, it's a passion that grown from deep within, it's the moments when U do find the best loving homes where your babies (We had all "Pet/Companion Quality" babies) are loved and cherished, some people out here live for their yorkies and yes would die for them, I know I do and would, but I also would do the same for my children, it's knowing that you've gave others love pure lasting love, there are people who can't have children, just lost a spouse, just lost other animals and those who are elderly who has NO ONE and NOTHING to live for, people who are depressed and so lonely and grieving from life itself and our Yorkies give them that reason to get up a face another day!!! This is just SOME of the reasons I breed and maybe in others eyes I do breed for the wrong reasons and that is fine too but for me it's not for the money!! I gave 4Yorkies away no money made there in giving, There is no money to be made in breeding and raising yorkies, if done for the right reasons it's LOVE pure LOVE, what price do people put on love??? There is no price for LOVE!!!

Try getting 7 dogs to all get sleepy when you actually have the time to take a nap. As soon as you get everyone settled someone hears something and off they go a barking! Believe me I wouldn't do this if I didn't love it because I could make more money working a job that pays minimum wage and get alot more sleep! I've been up since 3:45, they are presently sleeping and I'm not.

See this is just part of what I mean by not giving U show breeders as much credit as U deserve! U've been up since 3:45 it's like feeding a real baby/ changing diapers, burping lol during the night but real babies grow to be sleep in teenagers lol not our Yorkies!! LOL! And yeah the naps it don't happen, ours is Galahad use to be Tif somehthing moves outside and their up and at it to let us know!!

I have your routine too and it is a constant thing with no long breaks what so ever. Heck just today I was up at 4:30 am and the 2 pups were stinky girls so they got a bath and blow dry before I even get my first cup of morning coffee. I put my babies first and myself last around here.

I feel lucky to be able to sleep in on the weekends till 8!! It's been 24 years since I've got to sleep in till 8 am, by the time I got my older girls in the almost sleepy teenage moods then here came our younger babies and then I choose to be a breeder and now I have Yorkies so I love every single part of my day and night with my babies and my Yorkie babies!! Wouldn't trade it for all the money in the world!! I know how U feel about putting U're babies 1st and U last!! It's a everyday thing for alot of us!! But we give to get, the joy of Love from our children and yorkies!!

Well I dont know if you seen my post in general, but my cousin who is 30 just accidentally killed her dog the very same way just the other day. Accidents happen to people of all ages, probably more so with adults than children. I know by far more adults that have accidentally killed their dogs (running them over with the car, letting them out to run into the street, leaving antifreeze where it shouldnt be, etc.) from when I worked in the vets office. I never had a dog come in that had been injured by a child. Not saying it doesnt happen, because it does, but it happens all the time with adults more so.
I have raised my babies with my dogs. My kids are taught from birth how to handle animals. I think it would be rediculous to never have had my dogs because I didnt want my kids to break them. I want my children to love animals just as much as I do, and withholding animals from them would be counterproductive.
I understand that a breeder has a right to sell to whomever they want. With my shih tzus, I always prefer they go to a home with children. I dont want them to become little nippy crabs because they were never around children. I think children help shape a dog into a friendlier pet.
My grandma has my Joe's brother Murphy. Everytime we ar there the dog runs and hides and if my kids try to touch him, he nips at them. Joe would never do that.

I think Shih Tzus are perfect for a family with small children they are much more a sturdier dog than a yorkie...and all my yorkies love children but I do have one female that doesn't but I didn't raise her so that wasn't my fault. If you socialize a yorkie properly then they shouldn't have a problem with children, people in general. I have a 2 year old granddaughter but she's NEVER ALLOWED to pick up any of my dogs but she loves them just the same and they love her. I will be holding her or the dogs and they give her kisses all the time and they all love it but again with the exception of Cammie ( I didn't raise). I would never let a toddler unsupervised around puppies. Again, I do believe children should have animals but the right animal for their age. And I'm about to probably open a can of worms but....if you have small children and when I say small and you have 2 or 3 my feelings are you should be caring for the children instead of a young puppy. LOL...dont' all rip me at once LOL...

Oh and one more thing...I didn't start showing and breeding until my child was grown and out on her own....I didn't even have a yorkie until she was in high school! We had bigger dogs when she was a child but my main concern was raising my child and not a puppy!

My little man was sold on a limited registration. Doesn't that mean you can't breed? And if you do, you can't sell the pups with papers? Correct me if I'm wrong. My sister has a girl yorkie and she wanted to breed our dogs. I never intended too beacause I was afraid of the unwanted male behavior after affects. Fortunately yorkietalk has educated me on how irresponsible that would've been anyway and I've been able to enlightlen my sister and several of our friends that wanted pups. Thanks guys

Limited registration means NO breeding.

chloesmom2000 02-24-2008 08:06 AM

I'm up early too and I don't breed!

yes..........I agree on the kids sleep late now, why can't I? Because my furkids wake me up........LOL!! (I am not a breeder, just a loving pet owner of two adorable furfaces....)They don't like me to sleep too late either, and want their breakfast before I get mine, and want their morning walk too....But, it sure makes me happy and I get so much joy from them. They make our family feel whole. I love and adore my skin children and my furry children. We all do. My 10 year old refers to our yorkie as his brother. And of course we all refer to ourselves as mom don't we?
I am a stay at home mom, but am beginning to think I should get a part time job just to support my fur faces!

I am so glad you know. So many do not and breed anyways. Reason I will definetly changed with this new litter I am expecting and will have my pups spayed or neutered before they even leave my home (that is if I have any available to pet homes! This way there is no chance they can be bred. If I sell with Limited registrations - I just want them to enjoy life as a pet and be totally spoiled! I do not want to risk their life, or bred to some other dog I have no control over quality, or change character and start spraying in the home.

Some need to check their contracts too - I have known some breeders to word in their contracts that if the new owners were to breed their pup later, and sold with Limited Registrations - the breeder has a right to reclaim the dog. So be sure you read and know your contracts! And if it states Limited registrations - that does mean - Spay/Neuter - Do not breed the dog! It is pretty simple.

Well I would seriously not know what to do if I could sleep till 8 am. I got more sleep working a full time job and a part time one. I adore my furkids and I wouldn't trade it in for anything in the world. I have no children and they are my kids and I spoil them rotten. I enjoy spending time with my Yorkies more then I do with real people to be quite honest. My yorkies aren't into drama, lies or just day to day bs like you find out in the world these days.

bchgirl 02-24-2008 08:34 AM

Had I really wanted the opportunity to sleep in...I would've really considered my decision to have CHILDREN. At least with my yorkies...we all occasionally go back to sleep...right up until something dangerous happens. A squirrel, someone walking by....or the dreaded... someone walking by with a DOG! LOL

topknot 02-24-2008 08:47 AM

If I had to make a choice between having children or yorkies - Yorkies would win! Reason I have yorkies now instead of more children. Actully I do really think that children a way more expensive. My 26 year old (well she will be 26 on the 25th) had to borrow 150. from me just Friday to get a rental car. And my 23 year old son still lives at home. He does help some, but could help more.
My husband and I jsut had an argument about getting up early with the yorkies just last night. He normally gets up 3:30 - 4:30 with them to let them up to go. I know - so early - too early. We do make sure they go before going to bed, but my Gi will get up on my husband's chest to let him know she has to go and he takes her out. She thinks she is more previledge since she became a champion. And if she gets up - they all want to get up and go. Well, my husband just had part of one of his toe nails removed this week and he was not wanting to get up with them. And I injured my foot during Christmas break and my foot hurts too (bone spur and planetisitis ?spell). So we are having a hard time wanting to get up with them. Still all in all so much easier than human kids!

Oh, good to know. Well, he's getting fixed on March third, so no worries there. But, it's nice to know what these things mean. Thanks!

people just don't see it. they still breed them and reg them w aca or some other poor registry. they sell them w aca papers and the people adopting the puppies have no idea they were not suppose to breed.

i am really trying to find a way for people to have them spay like a rebate. here, the vets will not spay them before 6 months. i know in other areas they do. it will really stop the poor breeding ethics if we could have them spay earlier.

all the interviewing for a new prospective person to adopt your baby does not weed out peoples intentions to breed. they just lie to you.

I do know a breeder who rebates more or less. You pay a set amount above the cost of the puppy and that amount is returned to you once you provide proof of neutaring. Of course, some people would just sacrifice that money in order to breed too.

Ya know....animals in the shelters here (va bch) are neutared and spayed long before 6months. Even 8 week old kittens and puppies...obviously someone is doing it...even though I personally think that age is way too young.
