Do you breeders really make no money at all from breeding?? I am planning to buy a new puppy for me. (guess I'll share a little with my family too!) I am willing to spend $2,000 dollars or a little more from an excellent breeder. But, I would truly feel bad if they made no money at all from this. I know how much time, effort, love, vet visits etc. go into raising a litter. I know it is 24/7. I also know about having a passion for something, which is the kind of person I want to buy my puppy from. My guess is many of these breeders do make money, BUT it goes back into their dogs. For attending shows, taking care of their dogs, beds, toys, food, vet etc. I feel like breeders should have a passion for what they do........not see $$$ signs. I have a passion for teaching.........for years I ran an in home preschool. By the time I paid for toys, puzzles, craft supplies, food, and wear and tear on my home, I made very little money. But, I was happy! It was what I wanted to do........it was a great "hobby" that I was good at and it paid for itself. Sorry,,,,,,,,,just some rambling thoughts. |

I'm sure there are those who make a nice living off of it...the ones that save $$ by not having proper testing performed, not having shots and vet checks for the dogs, that let them go too young so they can avoid the costs required for continued care, that breed super small dogs and charge and arm and a leg for a "teacup." So see, there are SOME breeders making money from what they do... |
It depends on a lot of factors..such as how many females they are breeding, how big the litters are, if they have to have c-sections, etc etc...some people make quite a lot of "pocket change" off of them, others don't |

Honestly, I don't see how people can charge anything less than an arm and a leg, do everything by the book and make a big profit. Like I said, I would seriously have to question anyone who made profit and honestly did everything ethically, by the book--I want in on that secret! But again, sounds like you've got a few specific ppl in mind, so I'll leave it at that. |

LOL...well this "group" needs to share the wealth!:p I just sit here and think about the $$ invested in breeding stock, the travel involved with it, cost of food, vet care, time with dogs and the litters, cost of testing and routine care for adults and puppies, grooming supplies,...and that's just the very basics...then add to that costs for those who show, travel, hire handlers, entry costs, cost w/ registration/clubs, etc. Heck, I dropped nearly $100 in PetSmart yesterday for a months worth of food/supplies alone for 3 dogs and no litter whatsoever. Thinking of how every little thing adds up, I definately see dollar signs, but they are all RED! Again, I'd have to really question if they were making this money in an "ethical" fashion, (Which I guess depends on what you consider "ethical too.) I'd question anyone who had to put so much thought into 'advertising.' Most breeders that I consider 'ethical' have waiting lists or are breeding for themselves and don't have a need to selectively advertise. |

Well I can't speak for anyone else, but I always seem to be in the hole. I just had a litter and it cost 2200.00 for any emergency c-section and we had one little singleton survive. If I do make anything it just allows me to put it back into my breeding program for the additional things my babies need. There is so much cost involved that you can't even imagine, but I love Yorkies and it pleases me so much to provide people with healthy happy Yorkie babies more then anything in the world. |

The claim of them being able to come here and "use" YT swings both ways though. YT is also a place where people can learn and educate themselves on what to look for when they are looking for a dog. So if they are falling victim to the scam tactics you are describing, then they are just as much to blame. |

first part: Yes that's what I was getting at. There are people that claim they are ethical when they really aren't. But they appear to be the best to others and will end up selling and having a waiting list because of YT being here and helping getting the word of email (like the word of mouth..lol). second part: I didn't say it was a scam. I'm saying that breeders use this site to their avantage. Make friends and sell higher. And what I was saying was that when everyone says the average cost of a yorkie is $1000-2000, a lot of people start to believe it, even though the average in their area is less, and will pay it because hey, 'this person seems great because everyone talks to her on YT and her everyone thinks her price is average.' People are more to likely go to someone that everyone likes and thinks is nice, even though they don't have the greatest quality. and with YT you are just befriending everyone and is getting your name out there. |

So far as money - I would never buy from anyone breeding for a profit. From what I have heard, most reputable breeders that breed for the right reasons and the right way do not make much money, if any at all. I personally will only be buying from reputable show breeders from now on - costs of showing and health testing alone set a breeder back lots of $$$. The breeders I would buy from only have a few litters a year (or less) so I highly doubt they are making any money...if they are, it's not enough to support themselves without having a real job. If someone is actually making a nice profit, they aren't doing something right... |
One of the parts I was trying to say was that on YT you are able to meet new people and make friends. (we all know that) But some breeders are able to make friends and appear great. Then when the times to come and sell their puppies they will post pics or advertise (make the ad in the sell/wanted section) the puppies. Everyone will then be like, 'Oh I like her, and she seems great. I would love to get one of their puppies!' even though they aren't doing the right testing or is doing something for the wrong reason (most of the time people don't ask). You will feel more comfortable buying from someone you were good friends with and talk to on a daily basis (on YT) then a different breeder. So may breeders use YT for their advantage because without it they would more then likely have to sell less or be keeping their puppies for a long time. -----------------This is what I think and is my opinion... |

I hear ya,, many people do use YT to continually talk about their litters and point people towards them. It gets old to see them in every other post made by some or references to the nursery. Personally, I don't advertise on YT and haven't in a long time. I have a litter now, don't worry, all reserved lol but that's my preference and has been for a long time. I don't like pimping out my pups lol. Please don't take offense everyone, speaking of no one specific. But like Misty said, YT buyers also get soo much out of the site. I just think they should do away with the advertising. I agree with you and Misty, it goes right back into the program. |

My dog Mya is pregnant now for the first time she is 3 years old. I was at the mall and walked past PJ's Pet Store the sign across the window read "tiny breeds" these so called 10 to 11 week old puppies were 2/3rds the size of my grown dog. They wanted $2300.00 for them plus tax; no papers and you had 24 hours to get your own vet check! Given that I can see why a breeder of a show dog would want much more. The demand is there. A LOT of expense goes in to getting a dog show ready. If Mya had a tiny pup, I would charge more because I know her Sire produced a very healthy tiny ill guy. Both Mya and her Sire have health certificates and vet check reports. There is no history on each side from past generations having any defects but she was not registered. So her puppies will not have papers. If her pups are average size and adult weight works out to 5-6 lbs I will sell them for $1500.00 I have promised friends that they get first notice as well as family. The dogs that people are paying $2500. From the pet stores have no history on the dog. Looking at the puppies I would guess they would be 10lbs or more. One little guy had massive paws for a Yorkie. I am not sure if I will ever breed Mya again as she had a tough time with morning sickness, I am cooking chicken and beef for her and she seems to have cravings...lol. She is only half way there and I don't like leaving her alone. A lot of time and effort and concern and vet checks, stud fee and special foods and vitamin zed drinks go in to play before the puppies even get here. I am now in search of a used playpen and yes a baby monitor. After all she is my baby. I am living of a disability pension and going through a nasty divorce so I have no shame in charging my friends and relatives for what will be a happy, healthy dog. BTW my wanting a 5-pound dog had to do with travel, my parents are old and live in Florida, I wanted a dog that would fit under the seat in front of me, and she does in her carry bag. I still think big Yorkies are lovely, I just don't believe in false advertising. |
OK, I understand. No, you didn't say it was a "scam," those were my words. Because IMO, anyone who comes on YT with the sole purpose of making friends so they can jack up their prices, who fool people into thinking they are something they are not, is scamming, IMO. Scamming, being dishonest, however you want to describe it. To sum up my take on it, the people who do make 'big bucks' are not altogether honest, with the dog's intentions in mind. To me, anyone who is breeding with profit as their main priority would fall into this category. And sounds to me like someone you described--who befriends people just to charge more $$ would fit in there. |

but no one will admit that they are here to 1. learn more and 2. get their kennel name/ breedings out. Well, they will admit they are her to educate and learn more but not about also getting their name out. And it just makes me mad to see so many people saying that this or that breeder is great when you can see that their dogs aren't the best looking and that they could have found a better dog with a different breeder. But it's so easy to just find a friendly breeder here and get their dog because of a few references then to go out and search a while. |
I would never sell a puppy in YT. I don't advertise here, paper, online well with the exception that my name is only on the AKC and YTCA website. I'm on my local yorkie club's breeder referral list and that's it. I have only one litter a year and with all my dog show expenses and vet costs and all that goes with breeding and showing what's a profit or even breaking even? I.e. Someone comments...I found a picture of Trixie when she was 6 months old and forgot how small she was... Then comes along someone w/, "It's hard to belive this litter I have will be that big...I can't believe they will be ready for their new homes in just 2 weeks! I just posted some new pics in the nursery." Or someone, in conversations mentions that they might get a new dog in the summer and in comes, "I will have a litter available in the summer..." :yelrotflm :yelrotflm :yelrotflm Thank you Cpt.
