Neutering/Baby Teeth Surgery

This Wednesday my Yorkie goes in to have surgery to get neutered and have some baby teeth removed. I am hoping that the vet will give me some afterwards care when he sends Cooper home, and I'm assuming he will because our vet is very thorough and caring.

Just curious what any of you have experienced with this surgery with your yorkies and how your puppies handled the surgery. How long did it take for them to recooperate. Cooper is still in the potty training phase. Once we think we have him potty trained he takes two steps backwards (we end up going on a trip or camping somewhere and it messes his scedule all up).

Morgan was spayed at 6 months and weight a little less then 3lbs. She also had 6 teeth removed. I took her in in the morning and brought her home around 4. by 7-8 when we were eating sushi for dinner she was her normal food begging self. I gave her the pain meds the next day but after that she didn't need them.

I think males tend to have it a little easier with this surgery than females; it's not as invasive. Joey had pain medication, but it made him hyper and vet recommended we take him off it. He seemed to do well a couple of days after surgery. Many people do have some potty training setbacks about this time, but don't get discouraged, all of a sudden they start to get it.

I got Peanut Neutered at 4 months, so at the time I didn't have them pull his teeth I wanted to wait to see what was going to happen..That is GREAT you are doing it at the same time!!

Peanut took his neuter sx really bad, The day he came home he was completey out of it! He was shaking and sore and just not him. I let him sleep with us so he didn't have to wear his cone and I could keep and eye on him He was very uncomfortable..The next day he just slept...still didn't want to eat or move for that matter.. I think about the 3rd day he was acting normal.I just had to baby him

Some dogs take it well and some dogs don't.

If you can try to be there for him as much as you can...you never know how they will react to the sx

Hearing all of your experiences have been very helpful. It is reassuring to know that some dogs fair well with it while some dogs don't. It must be a hit or miss with the surgery and the temperment of each dog.

My dog is a big baby so I'm guessing he will end up being a huge baby after the surgery. He can't handle getting his feet wet when the grass is wet or get wet when it rains. I don't know what we are going to do this winter when it snows when he has to go potty?! LOL That will be quite a challenge.

I'm a stay-at-home-mom so I'll be able to baby and keep an eye on him after his surgery if he doesn't handle it very well. The hardest thing will trying to keep our two elementary sons who are rough with the puppy along with all the neighborhood kids from handling him. I'll have to just crate him and have him completely off limits to all of the kids.

Yup it is really hard to tell how they will react..my friends male yorkie acted like nothing even happen to him! He was fine about 2 hours after the SX!!! So good luck and let us know how it goes. If you have any questions on how he is acting let us know!

That is great you are able to stay at home with him!! It makes all the difference. Maybe you can find him some shoes for the winter!!

Baxter just got neutered and 6 baby teeth pulled on Friday. I took him in at 9 am and picked him up around 4 pm. When I walked into the vet you could hear him yelping in the back but I think he just wanted his mommy because it stopped when he saw me He was a little out of it Friday night but Saturday morning he woke up and was back to his old ways. It has been really hard to contain him and keep him from running and jumping around, which they told me to do for 10-14 days.

You would never know he just had surgery - he is taking it really well. He just hates the e-collar but really only wears it when I am not around...he hasn't tried to mess with the stitches yet but I put it on him if I leave just to be safe. I joke that, because he doesn't move when I put it on him, he is going to be standing in the same spot I left him in just staring at the wall when I get back

Lol, that's so funny! Get the camera out! When they won't move is a great time to take pictures, and while you may think he doesn't look that great now, someday you will look back and think it's the cutest picture ever!

I'm glad his surgery went well, and Joey's vet said that he didn't have to wear the collar, and I could just put clear deodorant around the incision spot, and this would discourage licking. Some people choose to have them wear baby's one-piece "onesies" so that they can't reach the spot. I wish I'd known about the onesies because after a few days he really needed a bath, but you have to wait 2 weeks with dissolvable stitches.

Cooper came out of surgery better than I thought he would. He is very groggy still. Today he ate like he never has before which I thought was odd. He isn't usually a big eater and I normally have all I can do to get him to eat his meals.

They didn't pull his baby teeth because his adult teeth hadn't came through yet. He has to go back to the vet in 2 months for a check up to see where his teeth are at that time to determine that issue.

Cooper tried to run up the stairs and follow me. He got half way and stopped. I didn't realize he was behind me. I picked him up and put him back in his crate. He has either layed with me or stayed in his crate all day. He normally is very loving and cuddly with me but since the surgery he is very distant and scared of me. My husband thinks it is becuase I'm the person who took him to the vet to 'remove his manhood'. Poor doggie! I just feel terrible! I hope he feels better soon. Keeping him from being active will be very hard this weekend.

He hasn't gone potty or drank much which concerns me. He has gone #2 though. I'm going to call the vet.

When dogs aren't feeling well, they prefer being left alone. Steps are really hard for them the first few days too. Don't let hubby get to you, you only need one man in the house anyway, and Cooper can be your little boy! Death due to injuries related to car accident are the number one cause of death in unneutered males, and you now won't have to worry about Cooper going out and finding another woman! He'll probably be his old self in a couple of days!

Mr Darcy was neutered, 4 baby teeth pulled and micro chipped. Pain meds were not necessary and he ate as usual. No stitches, they used glue and he seemed his normal crazy self when I went in to bring him home. I'd gotten up early to take him in and was stressed and exhausted. Mr Darcy wanted to play into the night.........

Everyone here is so helpful. All of your experiences with the surgery of your yorkies have been very helpful. The posts have helped me be more understanding, careful and baby our Cooper the way he needs to be so he can heal back to normal.

He is seeming to his old self today. Very spunky, alert and eating again. He is doing much better than I thought he would do.

How is Baxter doing? Baxter had quite a surgery. He had the surgery that Cooper was suppose to have: Both neutering and teeth removed. Hope he is doing okay.

i had a great experience with spay but not so good with neuter and my boy lost 10 baby teeth -- make sure to get a pain shot and pain meds as the vet we went to did not do this and i was up all night with my guy as i was a new dog owner and did not know about er or we would have went to er that night i went in at 7 am and they gave him a shot and he was ok after that. I was not happy and switched vets and my girl's spay went great with new vet and only one tooth pulled
