| The entire story is very sad but at the same time the US kills MILLIONS of dogs ever year.......M I L L I O N S! Let's not forget dog that are bred for fighting, bait or animals that are used laboratory testing. Personally I find it all horrific. I cannot even begin to find an alternate solution. If the US cannot figure out how to control the pet overpopulation problems how are we to point of finger at a country like Kyrgyzstan? The US allows mass gassing chambers and heart sticks to euthanize puppies, kittens, dogs and cats. Do you realize that they use a large box and pump is the gas as the poor animals claw at the walls of the box to try to escape their fate? Heart sticks are done with a needle poked into the heart of the animal to cause death but some times their target is off. All the while the animals are fighting to get away from their death. I need to stop as just the thought of this makes me sick to my stomach. Hopefully when the shooters take aim they are looking to make a quick and clean kill. Then they need to begin to address the problem with neuter and spay. Which seems to be overlooked if they are back a number that is double from the previous year.

| I just wanted to mention a couple of stories I've run across. One is of 58,000 dogs being killed in Baghdad over a 3 month period, either through poisoning or shooting. This happened last year. What's really surprising is that Baghdad apparently has no animal shelters. While not like a Western city, Baghdad is a modern metropolis. The other is about dog roundups and mass killings in China. These stories are from the early 2000's and involves hundreds of thousands of dogs in just a limited area. This just leaves me a little speechless and I wonder how much stories like this are routinely repeated around the globe. We're far from perfect here (okay, it's shameful here), but geez...some of these folks are brutal. What an eye-opener. Anyway, here's the links to the stories... 58,000 dogs killed in Baghdad in campaign to curb attacks by strays ANIMALS ASIA

| China has so many human rights violations, it does not surprise me the same intolerance and violence is extended to animals. Yet the world contributed millions of dollars to their economy during the Chinese Olympics - which the Chinese govt viewed as their acceptance by the world as a major player in the world's economy. Concerning the mass killing of dogs around the world. I realize there is incredible poverty in the world. I have traveled in the Soviet Union before its demise and have seen the poverty villagers lived in and dogs suffering from distemper from the lack of vet care available. I have friends who are nurse missionaries in Central America and Thailand. However, I think we need to be careful allowing ourselves to justify these mass deaths. (I know we euthanize millions of animals here in the US too, and maybe we should be viewing that differently also.) I just think when we start justifying who lives and who dies it becomes a slippery slope. I have heard it brought up at dinner parties the $ that is spent keeping some ppl alive here in the US: "Third kidney transplant. How many transplants should someone be allowed before we say enough? This runs up all of our premiums." It seems to be a reasonable argument, unless you are the person needing the third kidney transplant.

| While I don't want to thrust our values on the rest of the world, some of this is shocking, even compared to what we do here. I can't believe that veterinarians are out in Baghdad poisoning dogs. The article stated the program started once 'funds were made available'. Like, how much does it cost to lay out poison and aren't there enough bullets there already? Somehow I feel that U.S. funds paid for this. The China killings are carried out by gangs roaming the streets with batons bludgeoning the dogs to death. This, in a country that is wealthy enough to be our primary banker. WTH?? That's some messed up priorities. In my lifetime I've had 4 dogs PTS. Three of them were at the vet's and one at the Humane Society. I sat there with every dog until the end and can tell you that the Humane Society was no different than the experience at the vet's office. Now, gassing dogs is a whole other matter and I think it should be outlawed here, no question about it.

How on earth can bludgeoning be justified? It cannot be justified...unless you are being attacked by a bear or whatnot.
