| Therapy Dog Questions Hi everyone! I am new to YT. I just adopted a little 4 year old Yorkie. She is so sweet, and so cute. She has an excellent deposition and I believe she would make an excellent therapy dog - visiting Seniors. (when my grandfather was in a nursing home he would get so happy when the dogs would come to visit him) and I would love to be able to do the same for others. Does anyone have an suggestions or tips regarding training before she goes for her test? The only thing that may be difficult is she does not know how to "sit" and "stay".. how difficult will this be to teach her? do you recommend I put her in any training classes? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. |

| The AKC Canine Good Citizen training and test are often the standard for therapy dogs. She would need to sit and stay for that test. Here in the US the Pet Partners and Delta society are popular training groups. Also in some areas the Red Cross certifies therapy dogsled has teams that go out to places. The liability insurance is key in these certifications, as many nursing home and schools etc will not welcome the pups without that insurance. Good look with your goals. Sounds like your pup may be good at this with the training. ask Round, maybe some here at YT from Canada can give you more information. Also check with your vet.

| I like this site for helping newbies to training. It is pretty thorough and free. Two very important aspects . Introduction | Mind to Mind

| Sounds like she has a very good temperament. Maybe you can consider going to a training program to get you started on basic training techniques. I love clicker training - have had amazing results with it. I don't know too much about service/therapy dogs tests, but I think in addition to sit and stay, they'll be required to do other tasks like 'leave it' in a very distracting environment and follow the heel command to a tee (forgive me if this is incorrect info ).

| You can go on google and find the list of tasks that must be completed and passed in order to be certified as a therapy dog. |

| I have done therapy work with my dogs for ten years. Each of the therapy groups has different requirements and different policies. I would suggest that you investigate the groups local to you. The training required is great o"on the job", but more important to me is my dogs are a pleasure at home or any where I take them. Come, sit, stay, down are, in my opinion, necessary for safety. As an example, I was outside in my fenced large yard with my Yorkie within a few feet just Friday when I heard that terrifying sound of a red tail hawk overhead. One "come" and Spencer was at my feet. If he had not obeyed and had decided it was time for catch me, my little guy might be injured or gone. Therapy work is terrific and the dogs who do it just great pets. I know mine are! Gew |

| I have been doing pet therapy work with my dogs for eight years. I love every minute of it and as important so do the dogs. I am a member of Bright and Beautiful therapy Dogs. June Golden is the president. I have also been a member of TDI ( Therapy Dogs International). Both are great groups. Their requirements are similar to the Good Citizen ones., but not the same. Therapy requirements are tougher. If your dog can pass the therapy requirements, the Good Citizen are a breeze. The group to which you associate depends on where you live and your own comfort, but basic commands must be mastered. Each group has a little different set, so check out the groups in your area.
