| If You Ship to Canada... Quote:
Not sure who knows this.. but we pay far more for Canadian clothing for dogs in our dog stores.. so since we did well for our buddie, it is so very nice not to go through any of the extra to get our parcel..(speaking from experience.) I signed up for one gift exchange, recieved my parcel.. it came in a small box and the amount for two toys ( a kong toy and a pack of tiny lates squeekies) was put down at 23.00 and getting 4 things in a small box the value was put at 68.00 so I had to pay 25.00.. thank god my parcels came in three separate parcels one from a sellers with no problems, or I would have had to just say send them back for this gets far too expensive. Remember we Canadians pay far more for what we buy for doggie things then they sell for in the States..( I shop for my furbutts like crazin while in florida for the winter.. It was extremely disappointing to me and sure put a damper on my excitement over signing up... So it is really important people do not add to the price of something.. thinking it looks better for there buddie.. if we sign up.. we generally dress out dogs and buy toys blankets and beds and we are are aware of pricing.. you buy a tshirt for 3.00 and it was regular 20 we see that you put 3.00 for it's price.. believe me we know you did not pay that and we look at the value of the item, not what you paid for it... [B]Again the Canadian's know prices.. so putting a smaller amount on the customs package does not mean we look at our buddie like they did not spend the amount or are cheap.. If anyone has questions.... just ask.. for I was so disappionted when this happened to me... so I do not do summer ones anymore due to this reason.. and it is too bad I have to bow out all summer...I hope this helps the person who gets a Canadian and has to ship to Canada..anne I have not signed up since then.. it was a first.. buddy did not know how to do it.. and due to not asking questions I was the one who had to pay.. it sure took away the joy that day ... If anyone has a question.. I would be more then happy to help them out when sending a parcel to canada.. Please know I am only trying to help others.. for my buddie really felt bad this happened for she did NOT know how to do it.. askanne Last edited by mypreciouspups; 04-02-2009 at 04:39 AM.

| Sorry that happened to you! I just have a question.. aren't we all supposed to mark the gifts as "gift" so you don't have to pay any duty...? |

That is the misconcepting on this...and this is also a great question... If a parcel is sent as a gift a money value still needs to go on the customs slip, and customs decides that if it is over the maybe 20.00 amount then you pay duty on the parcel or you cannot have it.. simple as that.. so although I did not sign up.. I am willing to help anyone that gets a Canadian.. for customs care little about whether it is a gift or no.. always about the money.. and the price of the contents in the parcel... anne

| For years, it's always been that if the value of your parcel exceeds CA$60 after current exchange rates, and so forth, there is a duty charged according to type of item plus the appropriate taxes according to your province both federal and provincial. Of course, if they have to collect upon delivery, there is also a customs/postal service charge of what used to be $5 for their trouble. Now this is for packages marked as "gift" where they also have no reason to suspect it's a purchase. In the past, as I was shipping to the UK, I had purposefully marked a lower value also since it seems the "gift" value allowed there was about the same though I can't recall if it was US$60 or CA$60 but the magic number seemed to have been $60 also. It's become such a habit of mine to always say $20 to $40 for anything when I'm shipping out so long as it's not something requiring insurance, etc. I don't believe the magic number has changed over the years. I know others have done the gift exchanges and have had no problems.. I just know I did.. and to have this surprise when your parcel comes is not the greatest when one has just bought and shipped items to there buddie and are excited about the parcel coming.. I just wanted to let people be aware not to over state a price ... thanks for reading my thread.. I just want people to be aware of shipping to canada.. I ordered two dresses and they were 80.00 for the two and knew I would have to pay shipping and yet it came right to me.. so one never really knows for sure how customs works..IMO only anne | |

| Thank you! Thank you for letting us know Anne. This is really good information for those of us that rarely ship out of the states and aren't too familiar with how all of that works, as there is no such thing here.

| Bumping this up for a reminder..... I would like to add that I have a lot of YT friends who live "Up Yonderway" and I do send "gifts" that range in price from $15 - $20 quite often. Shipping to Canada is NOT hard at all -- you can ship USPS First Class Parcel up to 4 lbs. and if you are clever with your gift shopping you can fill a nice sized box with lots of stuff, stay under the $20 customs limit and stay within the 4 lb. for the USPS First Class Mail. Other forms of shipment are either VERY expensive or VERY slow or both. The Customs Declaration form CN22 is very easy to fill out and you can even pick one up and fill it out at home so you won't have to bother once you get to the post office. Exactly.... That was exactly what I was trying to say in my post. The way I see it, the "value" of a box is determined by the sender and not by the store receipts. I couldn't imagine EVER sending a package that was valued at more than $20 to Canada. | Here are USPS Postal Rates Efficeive May 11, 2009 Ok-- I have a 1/2" thick document (41 pages) from the post office with all the new postal rates that go into effect on May 11, 2009. Hope this information helps. Like Anne mentioned -- If you ship to Canada, when you fill out the Custom's Declaration Form CN22 - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be sure to list the box as a "gift" and the value as UNDER $20.00. This is to prevent Canadian Customs Authorities from holding their gift hostage until they pay a huge gigantic custom's fee. A regular one ounce first class stamp will cost $.44 Domestic Flat Rate: $10.35 - Small Flatrate - up to 70 lbs. $13.95 - Large Flatrate - up to 70 lbs. I didn't include all of the various weights only the maximum International USPS First Class for Canada and Mexico $16.77 - International First Class to Canada - 4 lbs. $26.85 - International First Class to Mexico - 4 lbs. International Flat Rate to both Canada and Mexico with a maximum weight of 20 lbs:$25.95 - Small Flat $32.95 - Large Flat Note: I don't have the deminsions of the flat rate boxes, but you use the same boxes for dometic and international - it's just the maximum weight is different. From experience, the large flat rate boxes are not much larger than the small ones. Anne, I hope you don't feel like I hijacked your thread. |

And sometimes people seem to think that if they put a little higher price the buddie will think oh wow.. but most people know pricing that are on the forums.. so making a toy worth 10.00 that is 4.00 does not matter to people like me.. for I could care less what the customs forum says.. as long as I do not have to pay the 25.00 I paid out to duty on my first and only yt GE i did..I was SHOCKED when I went to pick up the parcel shipped via ups.. it was a very small box.. the buddie had sent two other parcels.. thank god she did it that way.. or it would have killed me.. I do think this is a good thread for people to read.... for when I sent mine to my buddie I sent ups and told them if there is duty I want it paid for by me..I sure did not want my buddie to get that surprise.. Again Cindy thanks... anne
