Collars?

Ok I have a question and I think this area would be the best to post it. How hard is it to make a collar? How do you do it? I am very picky in collars for Callie it can't be wider then 3/8" and because she is a bigger Yorkie its hard to find that width in one that's like for a 13" neck. Even on etsy the choices are very limited. I noticed lots of cute ribbon in 3/8" and was just really curious if I could make some of not and how. Any help or suggestions would be great. I also do not ever hook a leash to Callie's collar only to her harness the collar is just for tags.

You can buy 3/8 in webbing here: Flat Nylon Webbing 3/8 Inch

Then buy ribbon of your choice and glue or sew it on the webbing.

I'd buy a cheap ($1) collar from WalMart for the hardware (use that as a pattern for where to put the hardware)

I've seen patterns for collars on etsy too. I think they were a couple bucks each. I know I saw a free one somewhere too. Maybe on the miss daisy designs site? Or the free dog clothing blog? I thought I had it bookmarked but can't find it.

Petsmart has cat collars that come in 3 different sizes and also widths

Thanks guys or well actually ladies I don't know why I didn't think to google for a pattern. I found a few patterns so when things settle down I will attempt collar making. I'm not get at the sewing machine but my grandma is the master she used to make Barbie clothes for my mom and aunts barbies so she is helping me learn the machine.

Most cat collars don't go up to 13" and the have the break away buckles.

Be very careful with the inexpensive hardware....they break! I was walking one of my pups one day and he pulled and the hardware on the leash just snapped. It was a leash from the Target Dollar Spot. Never bought any more inexpensive collars, harnesses or leads after that experience!

I would love to make them too! I love collars but they are expensive and never really what you want. I agree with the hardware. I think, you could find it inexpensive by parts maybe ebay or etsy. I would love to see what you come up with!

She said she only uses the collar for tags, and I thought if she was only going to make a few of them for Callie, cheap would be the way to go, or even just to make a few practice collars before investing in the better hardware. But be warned, even the good stuff can break on you, especially if the metal impacts a hard surface a few times.

You won't even go up to 1/2"? That's VERY narrow (actually, too narrow for Jackson, lol, I prefer 5/8" and up).

But you get many more options on 1/2" ribbon collars on Etsy, etc.

I love the Up Country collars (5/8") ... not bulky at all (I'm very picky about the bulkiness of the buckle, more so than the width of the collar).

Here he is in an Up Country 5/8 collar.

But most of the time, he wears his 3/4" collar tapered to 1/2 at the buckle. That's why I love leather collars because they can be tapered but you can still get width for the design w/o the bulky buckle.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance with making collars. I just have a problem buying them

I would have my strong dad test the hardware but I don't ever pull on her collar at all.

On her little neck 1/2" just seem to be to thick but I know I am picky lol

I am not talking about hard impact. If you take a really good look at the hardware on the cheap leashes and collars and compare them to the good ones you will see the difference. That's ALL I was trying to share here....I never realized until that happened to me and I am sharing so that people are aware. That leash had had NO impact whatsoever..and when I really looked, it was cheap...it just had not occurred to me.

Sure, for practice I suppose it won't hurt...just felt I should share because honestly I think most would not know as I did not. I have never had a good collar or leash snap...not saying it could not happen, but I think it would take a LOT and my pups are not being drug through a war zone.

In the past I've seen tutorials on make collars. Busy making a ball right now (a bed and bumpers yesterday) for new pup...but I'll look out for the videos and add links, if found, a bit later.
