| Sewing After reading several of you guys posts and seeing the cute little things that you guys have made, I decided that I want to learn to sew too. So I went and purchased a sewing machine last night. I'm new to sewing so I don't have a clue what I'm doing or really where to begin. I purchased several McCall patterns from Joann's as they are on sale for 99 cents and I bought some really cheap fabric to practice with. I would appreciate it if you guys would give me some tips on getting started. |

oh how fun!! I would say find out if there are any sewing classes offered at joanns or a local fabric store. Sometime the local jr collage will have them for community classes. Take your time, READ the directions. Do not get discouraged... you should see some of my first efforts Practice does make perfect!! Good luck

| Where did you buy your machine? Most stores will give a few free lessons and teach you the basics about the machine. JoAnn's Fabrics also offers sewing classes... just saying bc sometimes it's difficult to assist online... If you can't do classes... read and study the owner's manual with the machine in front of you. Then, when you open a pattern, there are usually two pages of instructions inside... read and study them also. There is usually a glossary of terms too. If you have a specific question(s)... that may be easier to answer...lol. Good Luck, and keep us posted on your progress...

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Yay! I'm so excited for you! Sewing is so much fun!!! I took a beginners sewing class at a local Joann craft store that really helped me. I had learned a few basics as a young child from my Mom and Grandma, but I needed a refresher course. The class was $75 but well worth the money. They went over many of the basics. They talked about the sewing machine and went over all the buttons and things. I know that is pretty general, but I learned a thing or two. They also went over different types of fabrics, notions, etc. We also learned many techniques and sewed a bit. I would recommend it to anyone! Good luck! Can't wait to see your first project!

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Oooh, also a great thing that has helped me...YouTube!!! There are so many sewing videos on there and I have learned a lot from watching those! And go to your local public library to check out a few books on sewing. It's free and a wonderful resource!

| Thanks guys for the wonderful info. I purchased my sewing machine at Walmart. I didn't want to spend too much right now because I need to get the basics down first. I will check with my local Joann's and see if they offer sewing classes. This weekend I'm going to watch you tube videos and attempt my first dress or vest. |

| You'll have so much fun! I recommend Simplicity 2013 as a pattern to start with. It's a simple, one piece harness vest for either boy or girl....later you can embellish and add a ruffle or lace to make a dress. I recommend fleece fabric on this as it makes it's own binding or edging on this pattern by just rolling under and sew. I've sewed several coats for my girls and I like this pattern for ease. Welcome!

| I found the simplicity pattern 2013 at Walmart for only 97 cents. I'm going to take care of my children's dinner and then I'm going to get started. I didn't get the D ring the pattern calls for. I guess I'll get that later. |

| I just started myself. I bought a bunch of 99cent simplicity patterns when they were on sale at hobby lobby, but haven't actually opened them yet. I started with the free vest pattern here Free Dog Clothes Patterns then started screwing around with it a bit and made a couple dresses. Added pics of my favorite. |
