You'll have so much fun! I recommend Simplicity 2013 as a pattern to start with. It's a simple, one piece harness vest for either boy or girl....later you can embellish and add a ruffle or lace to make a dress.
I recommend fleece fabric on this as it makes it's own binding or edging on this pattern by just rolling under and sew. I've sewed several coats for my girls and I like this pattern for ease.
