| Does anyone know anything about toad poisoning.? Does anyone know anything about toad poisoning? My neighbors tiny chihuahua died last night and we think that it may have been from that.We live in miami Florida and it is very common here to have those large toads. My neighbors told me that last night she found her laying on the grass foaming at the mouth. She rushed her to the vet, and the vet said it was most likely poisoned by a toad (They secrete the poison from their skin). He also said 95 % of dogs survive. He told my neighbor she could come back for her the next day and before my neighbor walked out she was told the dog had bloody diarrhea and a few seconds later she went into cardiac arrest and she died. Im very concerned because I dont want this happening to my puppy if i take her out.Does anyone know anything about this issue.Thanx. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | POOR BABY !! There are toads like that in FLA - The bufo toad - and to me that sounds like what could happen if she touched a Bufo Toad - they make dogs foam at the mouth & are VERY Toxic Where I live (texas) - the toads aren't toxic ( I called the ER Hospital the first time my girls found one) but if a dog tries to pick one up they'll salvitate and drool exessively. I did days of reading about toads because I was scared of them too for my girls. I'm so sorry about the puppy ...a Chi is so tiny it was just too much toxin for the poor baby if she came in contact with one - you do have to be very careful living there - Here's some information on them - http://www.floridagardener.com/critters/BufoMarinus.htm |

| We live in North Texas and where we live we have LOTS of toads. Murfee loves to chase them but I have finally got him where he will leave them alone when I tell him too. I don't know what kind they are but they look like the picture of the bofu toad. My son has a red heeler and he has eaten them and really foamed at the mouth but he didn't die...just had runny stools the next day. They really scare me though 'cause I don't want Murfee to get around them. |

| Immediate action is necessary to save a small animal from Bufo poisoning. If your babies every contact one, and you believe that they have gotten ahold of the toxin, you MUST use the garden hose to flush out their mouth and nose right away. You'll half drown the poor thing, but you'll be saving it's life. You can do a search online for Bufo toads to find the exact method you should use with the hose. There's a technique to it, but I don't know what it is. Everyone that lives where these nasty critters live should know how to save their dog if they get poisoned. Even getting to the vet immediately isn't always going to save the dog/cat I'm so sorry about your neighbor's pup

| We're in MN and live along the Mississippi, so we have a lot of toads and frogs around. #1 - I can't stand the things... if you hear me screaming it's cause one jumped out and scared me.. #2 - I've heard that all toads have the poison... is this not true? My fluffbutts have gone after toads and I panicked trying to get them away from them. Anyone know? |

Yikes! I just read this.... that has to be the ugliest thing..... Sorry, but if I had those around my yard, I would find something to trap or kill them... they get HUGE!!! It's giving me the creeps just thinking about them. | |

| I had heard that all toads were poisonous and I think most frogs too. But a prior post on here said only certain ones. I wouldn't take the chance. Zoe really doesn't go outside without me and I wouldn't let her go after a toad. Really, for that matter, I wouldn't let her go after any animal, you never know what they could be carrying. Of course, things to happen no matter how careful you are. How sad! |

| Thank you to you all.I am new here and I never imagined I would have so many people interested and wanting to help.I had my neighbor come over and read everything. She was also amazed to see how so many of you cared about her baby without knowing her.Im so glad i signed up for YT.We looked at the sites and read all the info on the toad.Tomorrow we are going to try to see if we can find it.My husband told us he saw a huge one while he was painting our house 2 weeks ago.I think its the same one thats been hanging around the house for the last few years.I want to get rid of it in a humane way, but im afraid my neighbor has other plans for it.I think im going to try loking for it while shes not around. |

| Sorry...forget humane, kill it so no other animals come in contact with it - and they breed like crazy! My puppy Chipper had an encounter with one a few years ago, we live in Lakeland, and he nearly died. They're evil!!! |

| Our toads are not poisonous, but all toads have a substance that they secrete when threatened. In these little dogs, even the non-poisonous secretions can make them very sick and if dehydrated enough from vomiting and/or diarrhea they can die. Do whatever you need to get rid of those poisonous toads in your area and always watch your dog carefully. What wouldn't be fatal for a big dog can quickly take the life of these little ones!!!
