| Puppy Seizures Hello everyone and thank you for letting me join the forum, We just got our Yorkie on June 29,2014 and He is Now 12 weks Old (Jake) He had 2 seizures Yesterday. I he starts off by shaking then can't walk and tries to move his head and it's Wobbly, I gave him some Sugar water and a cracker after the second one and he perked up and started playing again like nothing happened. He has a vet apt today, But I was wondering about puppy food, I have him on Blue buffalo basics puppy Dry food, He is not a big eater at all. When we bought him I had bought a extra wet can of the food just incase he was a picky eater, I opened it yesterday and he scarfed it down quickly along with the cracker like he was starving. We free feed him when ever he wants it, it's always there. I am not sure what is going on here. Has anyone experienced seizure with their Yorkies? or blood sugar problems? He is 2.1 lbs if that helps, He is current on all his shots and in general is a happy puppy. |

| Yes and he needs to be seen by a vet and possibly a neurologist. Seizures are not normal and they are caused by something like liver shunt, brain issues, or just are due to epilepsy. You cannot say it is epilepsy without doing all the medical and neurological testing. You should contact whoever it was who sold you the dog and check puppy lemon laws in your state.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Definitely see the vet. If you can videotape prior to his vet visit what happens, that could be usefull information for your vet. It could be something as simply (although can be deadly) as hypoglycemia or as 107 Barney indicated a more much more serious issue - ie liver problems, epilepsy, neurological problems etc. And also check out the puppy lemon laws in your State.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Unfortunately, Washington State does not have a puppy lemon law. However, you might want to check locally to see if there are any available to you. Table of State Pet Purchaser Protection Statutes

| Definitely vet time! But I recommend royal Canin puppy food and a pea size amount of forti cal gel twice a day for hypoglycemia. |

| Epilepsy is not that serious in a lot of dogs and it is treatable. |

| If he was not weaned to kibble, he may not be eating enough of the kibble to keep his sugar up. It could be hypoglycemin, since it responded so well to food intake, but you need to have pup vetted for what is going on to cause this in yopur pup. It may not be hypoglycemia, so you need to have a diagnosis and treatment plan. If he scarfed down the wet food, I would be sure he has a canned puppy food available....I use Royal Canin puppy mousse, and then progress through their weaning formulas. As long as he is eating well, you should not have to worry about supplementing him with a sugar and vitamin source, like NutraCal or NutraStat....if this is a low blood sugar issue at all. Get a diagnosis to be sure what you are dealing with. I would be calling the breeder you bought the baby from and give them a heads up.....that you will be having the baby vetted and you will be in touch. |

| Here is a update On my little guy Jake. He has been on Phenobarbitol since August and he is doing great, We are slowly weaning him off of the pheonobarb Just because I honestly think his seizures had something to do with the vaccinations, I think there was to many at one. I believe in shots for animals and have always gotten them but The day after his shots he was very mellow then every 7 days exactly he would have a seizure. I just need to know for my sanity that it's not something else and am not giving him medicine for no reason for the rest of his life, My question is has any one else heard of the this reaction to shots in the little ones?? |

| Sounds like hypoglycemia/low blood sugar. Try and get yourself some Nutri-Cal and give it to him once a day. Could be more I'm not sure I don't have the bottle sitting in front of me, but I give Teddy and Lola that once a day and they love it. It's a high calorie dietary supplement that provides nutrition in a gel form. It's great for puppies who are finicky, off food or require an additional source of energy. I hope everything turns out ok with your boy! |
