| Vet wants to do an anal gland infusion?? Okay so Mitsi is My 3 1/2 year old spayed furbaby. Shes had anal gland issues since She was 8 months old. Usually I have to take her to Our vet and get them expressed once a month, until this month. Shes had them expressed 2 times this month, about a week apart except for when Shes going today its been a week and a half. The vet wants to do an anal gland infusion (at the price tag of 150$) to see whats going on in there and to pack the glands with antibiotics (another 100$). Ive never heard of this procedure. Im not sure what to think on all this. My poor baby hates the vet and I dont like the idea of them putting Her to sleep for something else because I know the risks. Shes on Blue Buffalo dry Dog food small breed right now and I have no switched Her food. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions or had the anal gland infusion done before? |

| I am not familiar with that procedure but i am very familiar with monthly trips to the vet for my Shih Tzu. I posted my experience with this in another thread. See below.. I have never had the Anal Gland problem with Oscar but my Shih Tzu used have to go to the Vet every 30 days and have it done.. I could tell when she needed to go because she would lick herself constantly.. My Vet advised me to try a different food. I tried several different brands and she does great on a grain free limited ingredient with chicken or turkey.. Lamb and Fish seem to bother her so I stay away from those ingredients.. Kaiah has not had to go to the Vet for Anal Glands for almost a year.. Of course all dogs are different so this may not be a solution for everyone |

| hmm I might switch Her food. Ive tried canned pumpkin but She HATES it, I have to warm it in the microwave and pretend to eat it myself so She thinks its a "special" treat |

Our case was different, Mimi was diagnosed w/anal gland sacculitis, inflammation of the anal glands. So vet recommended laser therapy or anti-inflammatory shot. Mimi was better by the 2nd day, so we didn't do the procedure, but she was very bothered by it. I would do what the vet recommends, you need to get that abscess to heal b4 it becomes a bigger problem. If you don't feel comfortable, you can also get a 2nd opinion. Maybe you can also try switching foods to a protein source that she's never had. Sometimes anal gland issues can be from food allergy...but some dogs lose all muscle control over expressing on their own, esp if it's been expressed over & over. Hope Mitsy will be ok.

| Well its not infected or absessed, is the issue, Her glands are just full, and She cant seem to express them Herself. One vet even told Me the reason was Her tail, apparently the breeders vet had docked Her poor little tail to short. They are saying that could be causing it. Apparently the infusion is just for them to look inside with a camera or something I think |

Your veterinarian will express the contents of the anal sacs if they are not already ruptured. Abscessed anal sacs will be opened in order to allow drainage. The anal sacs will then be cleaned and flushed, and antibiotics will be infused into them. Anal Sac Disorders in Dogs | petMD

| surgery? My baby just turned 1 . She has been having to get her anal glands expressed for the past 6 months or so. At first it was monthly but now we are going to the vet every week. The vet said that she has never had a patient with this much trouble before and that the only solution is removal of the anal glands. Its frustrating that a body part that I never knew existed is causing such trouble! |

How much does she weigh? What kind of food does she eat? Has she always been on the same food? What kind of exercise does she get?

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Maybe try a raw food diet... My fur babies get Primal in the morning and Earthborn grain free kibble in the evening..they have never had any issues with anal glands ever...my vet said its probably due too there food... Research it and then talk a out it with your vet

| Huey has never had his anal glands expressed, nor ever exhibited a problem. Yesterday, he butt-dragged to the end of the carpet, rinse and repeat 2 more times. I was gonna take him to the vet this am, despite no fish smell (yes I smelled.my dog's butt) but he made a poopoo this am that my dh would be proud of, and hasn't butt dragged since, so I guess the problem is fixed.
