| i need opinions Hi. My little yorkie Max is going to be getting neutered in a few weeks and i am absolutly terrified about te anesthetic. I read everywhere that yorkies have a low tolerence. He is 7 months old today and somehwre around 8-10 lbs i believe. This is my first time ever owning a dog so im not sure what to do, or what is safe, or what to say to my vet. I also wanted to know if it is really that bad to not get him neutered and if anyone has or knows any history with yorkies not being neutured. I dont know what i would do if anything happend to him. -Pete |

| Anesthetic Hi Pete My yorkie Robbie is nearly 4 and in his time has had to undergo 5 opps and has come through the anesthetic with no problems, if you have a good vet put your trust in them. As for neutering unless there is any medical problems I would not personaly have it done. I have never had any of my male dogs neutered. Good luck Chris Last edited by Highlans; 12-13-2005 at 07:09 AM. |

| Well if you get him neutered or not is a personal decision. My dog came through the surgery just fine as most others have. I think the chance that they wont come out of the anesthia is a low one and not worth not neutering over but I understand you are concerned.

| There are more good reasons to neuter a dog then there are not to. I had a wonderful friend (a dog of mine) die from testicular cancer many years ago, who wouldn't have died if he had been neutered. This isn't uncommon. Neutered males are more content, stay at home better, and are not out looking for or chasing females in heat. I know a lot of men who don't want their dogs neutered -- I call it a "man thing" --- and many of my male friends admit that that certainly is the case. I think you shouldn't worry about having it done. It one of the most common procedures dogs have done. It is normally a relatively simple and quick procedure that doesn't put a dog at much risk. You can't begin to compare it to the ansthesia needed for a more complicated, more lengthly procedure. I have never heard of any serious problems caused from a dog's being neutered. I am sure some of you can come up with one.....but hundreds of thousands of dogs are neutered every year. I have, however, certainly heard of many serious problems because a dog wasn't neutured. Two of my friend's unneutered male dogs ran off every chance they got and were eventually hit by a car. I have another friend whose male dog ran off and never returned. She's afraid that he may have been hit by a car. I am sure out little dogs are less likely to be out running around, but am sure that our little guys will be more content, happier little stay at homes, who may live longer and healthier lives if they are neutered. Still - it is (as one poster mentioned) a personal choice. **** If you are fearful of this procedure and the anesthesia that is needed, discuss it with your vet. I am sure he will put your mind at ease and help you realize that you will doing this for the good of your pet --for many different reasons. Hear him out (even get a second opinion, if you want one) before you decide not to do it. Good luck! Carol Jean |

| yeah i wouldn't worry about it. just make sure you go to a vet who knows what he/she's doing. when maxi got spayed she got a couple teeth pulled as well as 2 hernias removed. she had a 6 inch incision stapled down her belly for about a month! it was sad to see those staples on such a small dog, but she is bigger, stronger, and healthier than ever!

| I am glad everything turned out okay for you and he is done with his surgery. My dogs had 4 teeth pulled when they were spay/neutered too. One less thing to worry about.

| aniethesia for yorkies Hi, First off I am glad to hear I am not the only new doggie owner! Also I wanted to respond to your fears about the aniethesia. The breeder I purchased my Chloe (female yorkie) from made certain I heard her & had me repeat "Only use gas on a Yorkie! Do NEVER use an injectable aniesthsia" It is more expensive to do certain pre-surgery lab workups & blood testing, also for the gas vs. injectable but after speaking to my vet & repeating what the breeder told me she agreed on this issue. However, I am not sure if it has to due to mine being only 3 lbs3oz. and a female or not. They both also suggested the laser surgery level one. Chloe is almost 7 months old, and is due for her ovariohysterectomy surgery in the near future. I also opted on paying $15. extra for a respiratory/cardiac monitor during the surgery. Again I am not sure if female vs male applies..... Good luck on the surgery (scarey - isn't it?) |
