There are more good reasons to neuter a dog then there are not to.
I had a wonderful friend (a dog of mine) die from testicular cancer many years ago, who wouldn't have died if he had been neutered. This isn't uncommon.
Neutered males are more content, stay at home better, and are not out looking for or chasing females in heat.
I know a lot of men who don't want their dogs neutered -- I call it a "man thing" --- and many of my male friends admit that that certainly is the case.
I think you shouldn't worry about having it done. It one of the most common procedures dogs have done. It is normally a relatively simple and quick procedure that doesn't put a dog at much risk. You can't begin to compare it to the ansthesia needed for a more complicated, more lengthly procedure.
I have never heard of any serious problems caused from a dog's being neutered. I am sure some of you can come up with one.....but hundreds of thousands of dogs are neutered every year. I have, however, certainly heard of many serious problems because a dog wasn't neutured.
Two of my friend's unneutered male dogs ran off every chance they got and were eventually hit by a car. I have another friend whose male dog ran off and never returned. She's afraid that he may have been hit by a car.
I am sure out little dogs are less likely to be out running around, but am sure that our little guys will be more content, happier little stay at homes, who may live longer and healthier lives if they are neutered.
Still - it is (as one poster mentioned) a personal choice.
**** If you are fearful of this procedure and the anesthesia that is needed, discuss it with your vet. I am sure he will put your mind at ease and help you realize that you will doing this for the good of your pet --for many different reasons. Hear him out (even get a second opinion, if you want one) before you decide not to do it.
