| Question of the Night: Un-neutered dogs I have noticed that my Yorkshire Terrier has to get on top of another dog's shoulder's and neck area each time we run into them on our walk. Only once did the Shih Tsu do this back to him. Now tonight he tried doing that to a Lab/Terrier mix, I think. The owner thought he was trying to mount her male dog. I have no plans in neutering him and spoke about this on numerous times throughout the boards. But I am wondering if the reason he is doing this because he's not neutered. Also after all this action with the Lab/Terrier mix, he went on a sniffing hunt, like hunting. I have no idea what was going on with that since he never did this before "that much", that is. We usually go one or two blocks and this time he went around the block again, sniffing everything out like he was hunting something down. Kind of like nervous energy. Does anyone have any feedback on any of this~? Thanks. |

| Even if you neutered him, there is no guarantee that he will not attempt to mount other dogs. Sometimes my female even does it! They say it's more about dominance anyways. And for some reason, your male feels the need to try to dominate the other dogs. I personally would not be too worried about it other than the fact that it's not real good doggy manners and eventually one of the dogs is going to get annoyed with him. If he's still young, he might grow out of it as well. Not to be nosey but why aren't you going to have him neutered? |

Tanner, the Lab/Terrier mix did get annoyed and was trying to nip him it looked like. He was going at it strongly too. The Shih Tsu sits there and takes it, but the owners are elderly and don't know what to do. Their son got them the dog so they would excerise since his Dad wouldn't after surgery. It worked. Long story short, the reason I won't neuter him is because when I neutered a cat he quit breathing during surgery and was left blind, couldn't meow, etc. I was a wreck and had no choice but to put him to sleep. That is the first time that happened to this Vet. | |

| One more thing about why I didn't neuter him. Orignally, I was going to show him and they require dog not to be neutered for show. I still may do it. Right now we're in agility training. I don't know what the requirements are yet when you do agility shows. |

| I understand.... I'm not judging at all, just wondering. I actually belong to another group and a lot of people on their don't believe in spay/neutering but they are also very responsible and don't have unwanted pregnancies either. I'm not sure where I stand on all that but I was just curious... I believe that you can participate in agility training if your dog is fixed. |

| I also am responsible in other ways and make sure he's in my control when we are out walking or when I have him in my carrier. I've talked to numerous of people and some are gung-ho about neutering, while others don't feel the need to. The ones whom haven't neutered their dogs, they have in the past and have not seen a difference in behavior and other stuff. |

| In my experiences, I've found that the un-neutered dogs at the dog park are always the ones humping other dogs, playing more dominantly-aggressively, marking ON other dogs heads and marking everything around, and just more hyper in general. I am all for neutering male dogs and do think that most of the time it makes for a better pet. I would never own an un-neutered male dog. An unaltered male will spend his whole life searching for a female in heat. Naturally, they want to mate two times a year, when females go in heat. If they are not able to fulfill that "desire" if you will, it can make them crazy. They're also more prone to wander to search for that female in heat which they can smell miles away. However; I understand your reasoning NOT to and respect that everyone has their own ideas, and nobody knows their pets better than you so you will know what's best for your dog. Kinda O/T but in my personal opinion, I think it's dumb that altered dogs can't be shown. Any dog can compete in agility, I'm pretty sure.
