| RAW diet Hello! I am a newbie, just joined today. My granddaughter wants a Yorkie and we want to feed raw if possible. Does anyone feed a RAW diet and if so how much and what. Any supplements? We are all getting very excited about the new addition coming soon to our home. |

| Here's ours, works great. Quote:
I usually double the batch: 1/2 lb lean ground beef (80% or leaner) 2 can sardines (or canned salmon of the same weight) 1 cup cooked rice 1/2 c. veg of choice (spinach, carrots, etc.) 2 large eggs (slightly cooked) 3/4 tablespoon bone meal 1/2 teaspoon potassium 1 tablespoon safflower oil = 1569 calories I find the sardines rather smelly - so I substitute 4 oz of cottage cheese or ground turkey (I usually do both!). My hubby hunts, so I sometimes replace the hamburger with deerburger. Do not substitute ground pork. Since I removed the sardines (a very important ingredient), then I squeeze a fish oil caplet every other day over her breakfast. I also add 1/3 childrens multivitamin daily (the ones without artificial sweetener). Feel free to add 1 oz of liver to the batch - its good for them. All human grade products. I get the bone meal and potassium from iherb.com. I first made a batch without all the supplements - just to see if Bailey liked it. SHE LOVED IT - so its been this recipe ever since! I serve one spoonful per serving (the larger spoons) twice a day. It doesnt seem like much - I know. I store it in 10 oz plastic containers about 3/4 full in the freezer- one container lasts about 3 days. Tip: I put the raw eggs in the hot rice and let it sit a while (hence partially cooked eggs) Good luck!!! Let me know if you need anything!

| I feed Nature's Variety pre-made raw medallions. They are a balanced diet and no supplements are necessary. My guys LOVE it! Primal is also and excellent pre-made raw.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I have two 6 month old Yorkies and I've just started to incorporate the raw into their diet. I just throw them an uncooked chicken leg...LOL! I timed Jonah yesterday, it took him 20 minutes to finish, bone and all....it was his second one...Ksena couldn't finish hers...I'll start another meat in a week or two....

YT 500 Club Member | Just started switching my two, Alfie loves it, but Rosie prefers cooked so will have to take it slowley with her. She is a bit lazy though and doesn't really like working at chewing her food. |

| I've heard about a lot of people doing the raw diet. What are the benefits? Is it more costly than just buying a premium dog food? How do you switch your dog to a raw diet? Sorry for all the questions, just curious?

| We feed The Honest Kitchen, which is a freeze-dried, dehydrated "raw". You simply rehydrate with warm water. The temperature for deydrating is a little higher for the meat, so it isn't quite as raw as raw, but as close as you can get and the dehydration process eradicates any chance of e-coli or salmonella. It is a nutritionally complete food with fruits and veggies - there are two different chicken formulas, two turkey formulas, a beef formula, and an all veggie/fruit formula you add your own mea to. It is super easy to travel with and my girls love it. They have been eating this for two years now.

Benefits are fresh breath and clean teeth, once a day poop and a lot less of it, healthy and human grade products rather than not really knowing what's in the dog food. I've posted the history of dog food below, basically they use anything the FDA does not approve for humans and grind it into dog food, even the hollistic brands have some nasty things in there. i never had to switch Sadie, from day one i fed her the raw recipe and she ate it up and would barely touch her kibble from the breeder. she just likes it better and having little teeth to crunch if it weren't for this i'm afraid she'd go hungry more often i still free feed some kibble (Royal Canin) It's MUCH less costly, you make it yourself and store it in the freezer and they only eat like a teaspoon twice a day...see recipe for details...i don't buy my raw i make it myself, she loves it, hope that helped Dog food history

| I think I might start doing this. I've been researching on the internet about the benefits and how to prepare meals. So do I really just feed him raw food? Should I mix it with the kibble like changing to any other dog food?

| Generally, when you switch to raw - you can just switch completely - no need to mix with kibble.

The frozen medallions are another easy way to go and many stores now stock them. It is much easier to find this than a raw grind - though there any many places that do mail order delivery as well.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | [QUOTE=LuvMySissy;2759411]If you're feeding prey model raw- there is much more to it than this. You need to be rotating different kinds of meat/bones and you need organ meat a couple times a week at least. Thanks. Yes, I just started to introduce them to it and the only thing I've tried is the chicken leg. I'm going to try another meet this week. I read to try one thing at a time and then add another. Kind of like feeding a baby is how I look at it. Try one for a while to make sure it's okay then add another...I want to give them the whole bone for their teeth which is the reason I decided to do this. I'm still giving them Wellness but will do it less as they get used to the raw. By chance, does anyone have a list handy of different meat/bones and organ meat okay to use. All I know is what I've goggled...
