Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Very interesting: using sterols/sterolins/phytosterols for allergies and more Received Susan Davis' newsletter last night and it was about Sterol 117 ($55 on sale) - and it looked so interesting, especially bc Marcel is having such a tough time w/ pollen right now . Anyway, here is what sterols do (from her site): Sterol 117 doesn’t treat symptoms per se—it works deeper to help the body’s immune system realign and rebalance. Phytosterols suppress the release of Interleukin 4 (IL-4) so histamine is not released and allergy symptoms are controlled. Also, Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is normalized acting to protect lung tissue from further dysfunction. Thus, over time, with use of Sterol 117, we have seen pets with severe environmental allergies who have followed all of our other allergy protocols, get long-term relief with Sterol 117. So basically, if histamine cannot be released - symptoms cannot occur. I love this approach bc it isn't treating symptoms, it's preventing the histamine reaction altogether. It strengthens the immune system too, over time. It is also being used (sterols, that is) in cancer, CFS, HIV, and other immune related disorders to help modulate the immune system and bring it out of a "hyper" state. So, I spent last night researching these sterols and found a ton of info out there - all confirming this inhibition of the histamine response, here is another article: www.americanwellnessnetwork.com - Stop Allergies in Their Tracks. Cool! So, I emailed Susan asking for a correct dosage for Marcel - but she emailed back that it's too big for him and she really only uses it in larger animals. So then I started hunting for an alternative, bc I seriously must try this. Anyway, there is a fairly well known (and also studied) product called Moducare ($19 on iherb.com) that contains the appropriate and "proven" ratio. Interestingly, Only Natural Pet sells this exact same product - with a different label and calls it Immune Response ($22) - there are 39 reviews of that product on Only Natural Pet. Anyway, I'm giving Moducare a try - this whole phytosterol thing is really interesting!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Thank you Ann. I've a friend whose yorkie suffers from seasonal allergies. She's been hesitant to give her traditional meds for the condition and this may be the answer for her girl too. I'll send her the links.

| Let us know how it works. Lady has environmental allergies and this time of year is terrible for her. She takes Zyrtec per her vet, but I am always on the lookout for other options. |

| Wow, Ann! That's great. So, how much are going to give him? I'd love to try it for Lilly.

The most important thing to know is to give 1hr before or after a meal - and DON'T give w/ animal fat. In other words, give w/ a bit of peanut butter, apple sauce etcetera.

| That information looks great Ann! Did you talk to Susan about the Moducare? What made you decide on that dosage for Marcel? As you know Jamie's allergies are a mess! Runny nose, watery eyes, the itchies... yesterday he woke up and coughed up some clear mucus which I think is probably sinus/allergy related too. I gave him some Benedryl and he ate and drank normally for the rest of the day and again this morning. I just hate that he's uncomfortable. I have allergies so I know how he feels. He really hates the liquid benedryl too! I need to look into seeing if they have chewable childrens benedryl and ask my vet what his dosage would be... Keep us updated on how this works for Marcel!

| hmmm...interesting.... I thought Roxy was in the clear, but her intense itchy of her armpits, ears, face, head has forced me to give her Benedryl 2x a day again, and to keep a cotton T on her. And I may even have to up the Benedryl to 3x a day, bc she is still scratching |

| The benedryl is actually pretty safe, even at long term use and even for Roxy with MVD (Liver Issues) - But I hate seeing her itch so much - it must be driving her insane too |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Very interesting!!! Cali is on Atopica which is an immune suppressor to control her allergies and lately she started scratching again so I am interested in seeing how this works for you. Please keep us posted.

I too have tried Benadryl w/ him this last week and it really doesn't touch him at all, it's weird. I asked his new vet about it and she said it's her experience that Benadryl rarely helps dogs...so I guess that's what she sees. It probably works for some though. He isn't really itching much at all - his main symptom is chewing at his paws and runny/gunky eyes.

| The Benadryl doesn't phase Lilly much but it helps a little and at this point I'm gonna use anything that helps a little. Lilly chews and licks her paws too and her eyes have been really gunky and runny here lately since the weather is getting warmer. My allergies are horrid too, I wish we could both just live in a bubble together

| I'm ordering Moducare too. Thanks for the post. I got an email from "Ask Ariel" about the same stuff. Didn't pay much attention until I read your post. Really appreciate you sharing your research. I feel confident in trying it now! I didn't realize it's for humans too, my skin baby (21YOA) suffers right along with Roxy- with the both of them whining and scratching, my nerves get frazzled. HOPefully they both will benefit! |
