| hacking noises?? need some advice My one year old yorkie has been making a hacking noise. It's hard to describe it. It sounds like he is going to vomit, or kinda like he has a hairball.? But he will make this sound at least once a day, and sometimes it lasts a good while. He's been doing it about all winter. We took him to the vet about a week or so ago. There was no fever, and he shows no signs of feeling bad what so ever. She looked at his throat and said it was a little red, she said he probably has form of strep throat( not sure about spelling). They gave him some amoxil, an antibiotic, to take twice a day. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this. Thanks. |

| hacking noises?? need some advice I understand that Yorkies have very narrow tracias (SP) and pulling on a leash at their necks and cause tracia damage. The hacking cough is a sign of this. I would try to find a vet that is familiar with Yorkies. If she barks normally most of the time, she should be all right. LexiLou |

| It could be a bunch of different things I went through this with Milo Firtst they thought Kennel Cough so we went through meds for this, then the Vet thought Collapsing Trachia and just as they were ready to do a scope the he started doing it while I was driving by the Vets I rushed him inside and it turns out it was reverse sneezing he only does this in the fall so we are thinking it is a slight allergy. So every fall he gets some cough medicine only to sooth his throught. If you can take video of the episode that will help your vet determine better what it is. Also remember that you are your pets voice only you can speak for them if the meds dont help and you feel it is more you have every right to seek a second opinion, and never hesitate to call your Vet again an say that the meds are not working and you would like them to look again. |

| I just took mine to the emergency vet this weekend for the exact same thing. She had esopagitis and pharyngitis. The gave her some stomach meds to calm the inflammation. The antibiotics she was on for her anal gland rupture, irritated her GI tract. They think that she might have allergies adding into the mix as well. All I know is that I am vacuuming more than I ever have. I have the cleanest carpets in the northeast! |

| it could be so may things, kennel cough that is treated with antibiotics. if not treated it can turn into neumonia which is bad. aslo, it can be a collapse trachea, reverse sniffing take her to the vet asap. whatever it is, it has to be treated asap. my baby had kennel caugh 2 days after I brought her home, it was treated with anitbiotics and gone. but it came back again, so she is on an antibiotic called clavamos for kennel cough.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It could be reverse sneezing, allergies, kennel cough - or just strep throat like the vet thought. It sounds like you're on the right track to find out though. I'd get thru this round of antibiotics and see if it stops; if it doesn't, then you know it's from something else.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | There is not much you can do until you see the vet...unless you call the vet ahead of time and ask them for a cough suppressant recommendation to use in the mean time.

| @Paisley's mommy...Welcome to the wonderful world of Yorkie's. It's just the norm for the breed & mine too have been doing pretty much the same as you describe when I got mine back when he was 8 weeks in 2/08. Nowadays it does seem to progress esp when it's cold outside or when he gets excited so I have to get him to settle calm down. Def when it's cold it's very noticeable so I have to prob start to put a warm vest on him during the cold months. I did this on a pinch just found some old socks so you can see there's creative economical ways.... |
