| Received the Dreaded Postcard I knew it was coming this month... the postcard from our old vet for Lilly's annual vaccinations & boosters that she "needs". I know most vets still don't go by the fact that they're over vaccinating pets but I fear that it is going to be a huge issue since I live in KY & everything is sooo behind here. Our vet probably hasn't even heard of the over vaccinating, haha. I've looked for the previous started threads about over vaccinating but haven't had any luck finding anything. When I use the search, it says my words are either too short or too long . Someone help me find these! Her postcard is for: ·10/3/2008- K9 COUGH ANNUAL BOOSTER ·10/24/2008- ANNUAL DHLPPV VACCINATION ·10/24/2008- RABIES BOOSTER Also, I know rabies is required by law but how serious is that? Lilly is inside pretty much all the time unless we're out and she's in her carrier or in my arms. Does she still need the booster? She's 1 year & 3 months and weighs around 9 lbs if that matters. Thanks for any and all help.

| So she had her puppy vaccines and this will be her one year booster correct? In this case I would ONLY get DISTEMPER and PARVO boosters. I would then go back in 3-4 weeks for the RABIES booster. I do not recommend getting any of the other vaccines so do NOT get that 6-vaccine combo. Also, I don't recommend giving bordetella unless you really believe your dog is at risk for getting it such as being boarded in a kennel often. However, bordetella is a treatable infection and not fatal so I personally still would not vaccinate against it and instead would treat IF my dog got it. After these one year boosters, I don't believe dogs need anymore vaccines. These vaccines are thought to protect for LIFE, but if you want to be safe, get titers. The law does require rabies every three years after the one-year booster so that's up to you on whether you want to follow it or not. No vet can MAKE you vaccinate your dog.

9/13/07- DHLPPV & K9 Cough 10/5/07- DHLPPV & K9 Cough 10/26/07- DHLPPV & Rabies Then out beside of the 10/26/07 date it says to return on 10/25/08. On the other hand, her breeder gave me a puppy pack that had a vaccination chart on it as well. I assume it's the chart they used to keep up with what their vet vaccinated against. She filled in the dates (I think) and their vet checked off whatever they vaccinated then my vet checked off what he vaccinated on 9/2/07. It shows: Birth: 7/8/07 8/19/07- Distemper, Infectious Canine Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus 9/2/07- Distemper, Infectious Canine Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, Bordetella (kennel cough) I feel like what I'm typing is jibberish but I'm trying to explain myself. Vets around here make me nervous so I thought I'd get some insight on here beforehand. I'll try to clarify anything if I can.

I was looking at this link earlier..it's a blog that a vet keeps about overvaccination. There is a video at the bottom Is Your Vet Clueless, Too?

| I concur. Being vaccinate 5 TIMES as a puppy. Wow. If you have to get lepto, I would not give it in a combo. Most dogs don't need and shouldn't have it. You really do need to comply with the rabies laws because if something happens, they can demand a rabies test on her and that is done on brain tissue, so she would have to be euthanized. At the very least, they would probably want to quarantine her... One year boosters are important because the immune system wasn't mature as a pup, so she does need at least one more round of parvo and distemper and then you could decide the protocol you want to use from there. Adenovirus 2/Hepatitis is also a core vaccine.

Ok! Do you board, doggy day care, or do play dates with your puppy!? Usually the bordetella (kennel cough) vaccine that they shoot in the nose, is good for 6 mths- if you dont board your dog, i wouldnt really waste time to get that vaccine- and if you do decide to board, get it done 2 weeks before so it can get in her system- some groomers may require them to have this done as well- i usually dont get this vaccine. ANNUAL DHLPPV VACCINATION- this is VERY important vaccine- i would get this, and so is rabies even though she stays inside, anything can happen...rabies is usually good for 3 yrs too! hope this helped!

I do want to add that Adenovirus and Hepatitis usually only affect young puppies, and both of those are treatable illnesses which is why I don't recommend vaccinating against them.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | About the rabies vaccination/booster....My vet told me the chances of my dogs contracting rabies were slim to none, since they are not "outside" dogs and only spend limited time outdoors, and always supervised. BUT he said if by some small chance, grumpy Darcy snapped at a child, and I couldn't PROOVE she had her vaccinations, I could be in a world of trouble. He said the rabies vaccination now-a-days is more for the protection of the humans/homeowner. Food for thought. |

| We are in KY too, I know that the rabies has a one year booster from origional shot and from that point on you will only have to get it every three years. Jeri and Harley |

| So I should get the 2 but not the K9 cough? She's never been boarded and probably never will be, not anytime soon anyway and she rarely goes to the groomer. I think I'm just an idiot when it comes to vaccinations.

| I wouldn't get the kennel cough..just parvo and distemper. And rabies in a few weeks.
