| To express the glands or not This morning i noticed my little guy doing the butt scoot, so I picked him up and washed his butt good with baby wipes when I did this i noticed his anus was pretruding. There are a few things i think might be causing this. I want to know if we should take him to the vet or wait and see if it improves. Our little guy was sick monday night from the heat and he was throwing up, so we fed him nothing but rice & cottage cheese on tues. which threw of his regular cycle. He was pooping more regularly yesterday, but his stool was soft. Do you think his new found booty problems are due to his special diet and tues and that once he gets back to solid food and gets the rice out of his system he'll work out the problem on his own? or do you think we should take him to the vet and get him checked out? Thanks P.S. he also got a small haircut yesterday, was playing in my mom's pond at the farm, and got a bath.

| What would I do? I'd wait and see how he does today and perhaps even tomorrow. I'd put some anti-itch cream on his rear end and see how he does then. I wouldn't get in too big of a hurry. Once you start expression of the anal glands, you will always need to do it. If it is, indeed, the anal glands, then he'll continue to scoot throughout the day. OK?

| I don;t express Mojo's anal glands, only the vet, he is almost 2 years old and never had a problem...i also specifically tell groomers not to do it! So if i were you i would have the vet check it out!

| I know I sound dumb but what does it mean to "express anal glands"?

| I'll wait the rest of the day to see if a couple more regular poops corrects the problem. If not I'll stop by the vet with him tomorrow to see if they'll take a look. Any other advise it still appreciated though. I don't want to start expressing unless i have to. I just dont want him to be uncomfortable i know how irritating it can be when my butt itches.

is there a reason why you dont allow the groomers to express the glands?? and should this be a rule of thumb that only the vet should perform this?

Oh! And Babbie said that she didn't allow groomers to do it - only the vet. IMO that is good advice. It's true that it is easy to do, but it is also true that someone who thinks they know what they are doing, but doesn't, can cause injury.

| This was not on yorkies, but would be the same thing. Perhaps it will help someone. HAPPY EXPRESSION EVERYONE! Your dog has two anal sacs, one on each side of the anus. The sacs contain a very strong-smelling liquid that pets use to mark their territories and in identifying each other. Anal sac problems are most common in miniature dogs such as us Dachshunds, bummer! (no pun intended) Yeah right. The sacs normally release a little fluid through small openings whenever your dog has a bowel movement. Sometimes the openings will get clogged or the glands produce more fluid than the sacs can hold. This is very uncomfortable for your pet and leaves them with a feeling of fullness. To express the sacs bring your pet to an area that can be easily cleaned and not hold odor. Perhaps vinyl flooring like in the bathroom. If not put papers around the area that you will be working. Latex gloves work well at keeping the odor off your hands. I like to use tissue around the area while applying pressure to catch anything that sprays out. Kneeling at your pets side, lift his tail with one hand, using the other hand with paper towels or soft tissues place your hand in the five and seven o'clock position over the anal area. You should be able to feel two bulges if they are very full. With the hand that is holding the tissues, place your thumb and forefinger on either side of the anal opening and press inward. Make sure the anus is covered with the tissues or you may be in for an a very unpleasant surprise! You should actually be able to feel the sacs emptying out and reducing in size. If nothing comes out at first, try again by repositioning your fingers slightly until you have the correct location. Pushing too hard can be painful and can also damage the sacs, press firm but gently. Continue until no more fluid comes out. I like to apply a little Neosporin or Vaseline to the anal area after expressing to make the area a little more comfortable. http://www.dachshundpages.com/petvet...htm#Anal%20Sac

| Our big dogs never had this problem, so I can only wonder if it isn't just more prevalent in the toy breeds. I don't know...just a guess.
