I had brought our golden retriever to the vet after adopting him from the pound. We had him several months and he continually licked his rear and drove me nuts (nothing worse than a big dog hunched over licking his privates infront of everyone). The vet said that if their glands are not expressed on their own when having a BM that a dog will try to express them hisself by licking. He told me to let him lick himself, he is doing it for a reason. He has not had a problem since then, it has been probably 4 years. The vet did express the glands that day, but the licking continued. Anyway, the vet also said that they can get sick if their anal glands get blocked up and it isn't taken care of.
