| Any suggestions on Airline Travel? Buster Brown will be travelling to meet his grandparents for the first time this summer. He will be just over a year old. He is my first dog and we have never flown before. I have chosen a direct overnight flight as he sleeps through the night. I get up to pee at night and he sleeps through until the morning. He is good natured but the flight will still be 5 1/2 hours not including the time before boarding. Does anyone have suggestions on how to make it less stressful for him? I prefer not to medicate him. |

| I just took Wall-e on his first flight last weekend, but it was only an hour long flight. I gave him a vitamin thing called Pet-Ease that Petsmart sells, but it didn't have any effect on him. He was a little freaked going through security, and cried a little when the plane first went up, and then descended (I think due to ear pressure). I just snuck him some treats in his carrier to get him to chew and he calmed down. He was really good overall, but it was a short flight. Not sure what I would do for a longer flight like yours. I think he'd get restless and a little more vocal. Before the flight I had him out of his carrier and gave him water and treats and tried to get him to potty, but he wouldn't. I gave him a new toy to chew on in the carrier, and had his familiar blanket in there. I kept a shirt on him too because the plane is always so cold on the floor! Good luck!

| Thanks for the suggestions especially the blanket. I forgot how cold the floor will be, plus the blanket smell will be comforting.Wall-e is adorable! |

| You already have a well thought out plan! You wanna know what I did on my overnight flight? I know this is totally breaking the rules, and I wouldn't have done it if I knew Kaji would be a nuisance. After exhausting Kaji before the flight, and after he was safely in his carrier during take off, I used my on flight pillow as a bed for him, put him on my lap, and covered him with the provided blanket. He slept the entire time because he was so tired and he didn't have to be on the floor. Win win for everyone!

| I've never flown with a pup, but I'd assume a tired pup is better, so maybe taking him for a bunch of long walks that day would help. Good luck! Let us know how the trip goes. I'll bet his grandparents can't wait to meet him |

| It willl go fine! I took my bella into a 4 hours fligh and she did really good!. She tried to fight the traveling cage for a little bit but she was fine. Then she just lay down for the rest of the flight. Also do not feed her or give her water a couple hours before the flight. Do not forget to make reservations with your airline because they only allow 2 dogs per flight! |

| It sounds like you have a good plan already -Make sure you have his reservation booked. I think someone already mentioned that above too. -Practice with him in his travel bag to help him get used to it; go to the mall, with him, etc... -Make sure your travel bag has the appropriate dimensions to go under the seat... -Plenty of exercise that day; take a long walk and big potty break right before you leave for the airport -Have a blanket, or something in case it is cold on the floor of the plane -I know you said you do not want to medicate; if you want to give him something to relax, my vet recommended Children's Benadryl which I used for our international flight -Take a package of baby wipes, just in case of an accident I'm sure you will have a smooth trip! I was so concerned about how Remy would do and he surprised everyone |

| If your traveling on a flight that has the little tv's on the back of each seat let the stewards know you are travling with a pet. Normally the tv equiptment is kept under the floor of the middle seat and it gets very warm and can be dehydrating. I always travel with an extra blanket, baby wipes and pee pee pads. Be prepared for a layover with carry on food and treats and a little bowl for water. Have a wonderful trip!!

| What are the requirements to travel internationally with a pet? Is there extra vaccination? Any precautions? Any tips? My parents want to take Kaji to Mex, but we have no idea what we need.

Key considerations: Microchip. See if a microchip is required. For me, I needed an EU-compliant chip (15 digits). Luckily that is what I had gotten for Remy (unknowingly) about a year ago. Many chips in the US are only 9 digits and do not comply. From the Pet Travel website it does not appear that Mexico requires a microchip, but I'd research other sites to see if that holds true. Either way, if you pup is microchipped I'd make sure to have the number and company's info with me in the event of any problem. Vet Certificate. We needed to get a signed certificate of wellness from our vet within 5 days of our date of departure. The vet visit requires an examination, they tested his micro chip, and went through all of his vaccines. Only one vet in our practice was able to sign these types of certificates so if you need one for Mexico (I think on Pet Travel is said you may) I'd call your vet well in advance to ensure they can do this for you. You will need to carry the vet certificate with you, just like you carry your passport. Rabies Shot. The vet certificate (above) will indicate that your pup is current on his / her rabies shot. Double check the country requirements, it may have to be within a certain timeframe of your visit. Bring your original rabies shot certificate that you received with the rabies tag - the one your vet signed. Customs officials in the US did examine it, and it was easier to just hand them that then the Vet Certificate which is kind of a complex, big form. Again, carry the rabies certificate with you like you carry your passport. Other shots. Check to see if Mexico requires any other shots, if so make sure you have the appropriate paperwork. The only shot that is required for USA re-entry is rabies. Picture. I had a current picture of Remy that I carried with the rest of his paperwork. I had seen this recommended somewhere... Airline Reservation & Fee Receipt. 2 pets are allowed in coach, so make sure you make a separate reservation for him to guarantee his spot. You will have to go to the airline counter to check in - at which point you will pay your fee. Make sure you get a receipt for the fee, and stick it in with all of your paperwork. I had to ask for mine, and it was a good thing because the staff at boarding asked to see it to prove I had paid. Food. What does he eat? I brought Remy's food to ensure he stayed on his regular diet and so we would not have tummy problems. Tags. Make sure you have his tags. "Just in case" medicines. Does he get ill? Do you have any medications on hand that you should bring? If so, pack them in your checked luggage. Overall, it was really no big deal, it just requires some planning and research. The airline staff at check in requested his papers, but once we got out of the country no one even seemed to notice him. Coming home you will have to go through customs (as usual) however we had a separate inspection so it became a 2-step process. They just looked through his papers and looked at him, but it did make customs a longer experience. I did give Remy some Benadryl to relax him. I carried a small container of Cherrios, wet wipes, a blanket, and got him a bottle of water once we got through security. I also packed his shampoo, ear cleaner, cotton balls, toothbrush, etc... all his "personal care" stuff LOL Make sure you do get to the airport even earlier than you would for a typical international flight. You do have to pay the fee, I had the airline staff ask a bunch of questions, I had to take him out of his bag so they can see him, etc. etc. Having a little extra time will give you more peace of mind. Enjoy your trip, Mexico sounds like fun!

| Thanks for the info Susanne! It sounds very similar to the things that I did when we traveled to Tn last Thanksgiving. I actually have the Mexican consulate a few blocks from my house, would they be a better source of information? At least for now I can check into his chip. What chip company did you use? Also, on the health certificate I got last time, the vet put Kaji's picture on it. Unfortunately, it's the one she had on file from when I first got him. He had a lot more hair, and was slightly darker so he doesn't look exactly like the dog in the pic, do you think that would be a problem? It wouldn't hurt to ask the vet to update his pic anyway!

Remy's chip is through Pet Link Petlink I did not select them, it just happened to be the company my vet used The health certificate we received did not have a picture on it, it was a multi-part USDA form. Perhaps they are not standard ??? I don't know...
