| High Altitude question I live in Fl and we are going skiing in Feb. We are taking our new boy with us. My DH asked if any of you had experience with a Yorkie and high altitudes??? We'll be about 13,000ft. I know many live in those climates, but being from FL, just wondering. THANKS

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | This is a bit different, but we've flown with our boys several times - so they've been at that altitude for a few hours at a time. But, we've never taken them to the mountains. It's a good question. I think I'd check out "what to do for altitude sickness" for humans, and then see if you can use some of the same ideas for the doggies.

| Coming from a warm climate like Florida, I would be sure and bring warm clothing for your little guy. Maybe even a parka of some sort. I'm not sure about the effects of high altitude. I'd be curious as to what you find out. |

| I used to live in Flagstaff, Az at 7000 feet and would take my girls hiking in the peaks and they were about 9000 feet where we would go. I didnt have any problems but they were acclimated to the area. I do know that there is not as much oxygen at those high allitudes and people visiting from the lower elevations would faint because of this. Definately bring the dogs some warm blankies and if possible, put shoes on them as the snow can burn their feet. Keep them inside as much as possible. I know, my Yorkies hated snow and I lived in Flagstaff for 14 years!!

| Lowlander--- I live in Louisiana (at 70 feet), but go to Colorado for about 6 weeks every summer. We camp at 9600 feet--- but 'jeep' on the 4x4 trails which go up to 12800-- and our yorkies go with us. We have no trouble with them at the higher elevations. Just be sure to have plenty of water and make sure they stay hydrated--- the air is much drier than we are used to (LA has high humidity as does FL). One thing that we also do is camp for a few days at 7200 feet to help us and them to acclimatize--- and it does help. Where are you going in CO? Last edited by KCKD; 01-14-2009 at 05:09 AM. | Thanks! we've been to Co every year for the skiing. This is our first taking our Yorkie, although he won't be sloping it with us, he'll be inside nice and cozy, as a bug in a rug. we're going to Telluride, we LOVE it there, have you been there to ski?

| Lake City I've been to Telluride many times, but not to ski-- We always camp in Lake City, a very small town, not very touristy. Lake City is due east from Telluride, over the mountain trails. (Not far at all by 4x4 jeep) However, to get there by car, go to Ridgeway, turn North on 550-- At Montrose go east on 50. Just past the Blue Mesa reservoir (about 10 miles west of Gunnison) there is a bridge across the reservoir-- turn south on 149 and Lake City is about 40 miles from there. Can't miss it, road goes right thru town-- Wonderful little town--- When we go to Telluride, we take a jeep trail from just north of Silverton to Bridal Veil falls-- it's called Black Bear, and is a great jeep ride-- Enjoy the ski trip--- wish I were going!!!
