Lowlander--- I live in Louisiana (at 70 feet), but go to Colorado for about 6 weeks every summer. We camp at 9600 feet--- but 'jeep' on the 4x4 trails which go up to 12800-- and our yorkies go with us. We have no trouble with them at the higher elevations. Just be sure to have plenty of water and make sure they stay hydrated--- the air is much drier than we are used to (LA has high humidity as does FL). One thing that we also do is camp for a few days at 7200 feet to help us and them to acclimatize--- and it does help.
Where are you going in CO?
